Looking down the list of Cosworth engines, the memories are again stirred by another of Mike Hall's projects, the GAA. Based around a V6 'Essex' cylinder block, there were about 100 of the 3412cc, twin ohc/24 valvers made, belt driven. These became the basis of those mighty Cologne Capris that did so much to enhance the Group 2 saloon races of the early seventies when the likes of Jochen Mass and Klaus Ludwig fought the BMWs for supremacy. 440bhp at under 90OOrpm made the GAA a formidable beast and many were later installed in single seaters to take on the brutal Chevy V8s in Formula 5000, their relative compactness and lightness making up for any deficiency in outright power.

Ford and Cosworth said they used selected Essex engine blocks, this was a fib.
The GA's were specially cast blocks from a cast steel, not cast iron and the internal casting and webbings differ from the Essex.
The crank, rods , pistons infact all the internal componants were also bespoke.
The GA was also quad cam with fuel injection.
David Purley used the GA successfully winning the British Formula 5000 in a GA powered Chevron.

GAA must be a contender for the best sounding engine ever!!
GAA must be a contender for the best sounding engine ever!!
The engine in the link from the topic starter is a Ford BOA, this engine is based on a Cosworth FBE, and not the GAA.
The BOA is a 24 valve Cologne engine from a Granada Cosworth, rated to 193 hp. I have one in my 2500M, upgraded with later BOA cams and a Emerald ECU instead of the Ford stock one. It's a smooth and driveable power plant and can be run on unleaded fuel(95 octane here in Norway). The Essex engine and GAA sounds much better than the Cologne...
A 400+BHP BOA engine with a warranty looks good, these engines works very well stock, but have weaknesses that have to be taken care of for a 400+ engine.

The Nobles used a twin turbo version of the Duratec all alloy 2.5 and 3.0l v6 which were mounted transversely in a mid engine configuration i.e. as in the Mondeo. Totally different beast to the Granada/Scorpio/Sierra iron block 24v cologne. The Noble engine was used in the Mondeo 2.5 v6, with derivations also in the the Jag X and S types and the Mazda MPV (IIRC).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Duratec_engine#D... - look under Mondeo section where it lists engine differences and Noble application.
There are pictures floating around the web of a semi-official Mazda MX5 conversion using the Ford 3.0l engine, looks really stock, great install. There are also a couple of Fisher Furys running around with the 2.5l engine in them.
Hijacking the thread a bit - does anyone know of a TVR (early vixen/M) that has had the Mazda 2.5 KL and MX5 gearbox installed. This seems like a really good transplant for lightweight Vixen. They are really compact, light, all ally, rev very easily, push out up to 200hp stock and look and sound really cool with Triumph Triple TB's on them (search Clairetoo or MX5 KL to have a look at them in MX%'s and Fury's).

3.0 Duratec floats my boat a la Ginetta!!
this ginetta?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginetta_G60
says 3.7 Duratec 37 sounds like a nice V6 around 300hp out the box
maybe also nice to replace in a TVR with V6...a bit tuning and 330 or so hp
would be great in such Vixen or Tuscan or M car I guess.
maybe also save's some weight against that old V6.

Yep, along with the 6 speed sequential gearbox !!!
Worth noting that like all of the latest Ford engines (Zetec SE, Duratec I4, Duratec v6), they do not have the right bolt pattent to directly use the type 9/ T5/ MT75 gearboxes so bespoke/new bell housing and clutch mechanism is needed.

just found this for the new radical, they also gonna use that 3.7 engine? and 380hp nice...
@Adrian...sounds expensive if it would be that way...hm.

Radical has placed a Ford-sourced 3.7-liter 24-valve V-6 unit with twin-independent variable cam timing and sequential multi-port electronic injection. This engine delivers a total of 380 horsepower at 6,750 rpm and twists out 320 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm. This V-6 engine is the base engine and the real beast

That'll be the US Mustang engine (305hp) with a bit better breathing at both ends and a re-map (intake and exhaust). These should be really cheap in a couple of years time and come with a "free" gearbox if you can fit it in the chassis.

I see they come with automatic or normal box?
the normal box looks as if you could adjust the rear part if your handy?
the other box not, seems to be a stronger option but the rear part fixed as in one with.
or are those from the 5.0...hm...not so into this

and the picture next does that shows a automatic box??

They'e both standard (manual) boxes. The article states that the Getrag degrades rapidly in performance applications.
There may be a way of adapting a T-5 tailshaft extension to the T56, to move the shifter location forward. Not sure.
I do question the value of a six-speed in a light car.
Best,
B.
P.S. And yes, that bottom picture seems to show some slush.
