Just bought my self a frugal 106 diesel for £500.
It needs new heater plugs or maybe battery, takes a few warms to start on a cold morning.
The gear stick feels like a spoon flopping about in a bowl of water, is that linkages ?
It needs new keys or locks as they just get stuck in the door (ill try oil first though).
The brakes feel better on a morris minor, anyone upgraded them ?
Other than that its a nice little motor to be fair.

What should I do to make it better ?

1.5 nowt, just keep it serviced

1.4 same as, but keep an eye on the oil level as their oil capacity is marginal (the 1.5 has a deeper sump and takes 1L more oil)

Brakes are pretty weak on these, i have a 106 for sale at the moment and they do need quite a push to stop the little car but checked out all the brakes are fine, its just how they are. Worthwhile though checking them out/cleaning up and adjusting to make sure. Also common is the porridge stirring looking for the gears, the nylon ball on each end has worn out, very easy fix though as the three linkage bars are around £40 and half hour fitting.

Glow plugs and a new battery should cost you about 13p from GSF.

Not much assistance on the brakes, give it a good shove and even pov-spec ones are acceptible.

Gear stick is pretty normal, get some linkages if you like but the whole system is pretty vague - I'd just put up with it.
