Ok so not real guns, but 1:1 scale replicas, that you aim and shoot at your telly.

Are they available already? If not, how long until its the next big thing in FPS?

I can see a kinect/PS Move system, linked to a rifle, with buttons and an analogue stick on the pistol grip somehow, and some buttons on the barrel/foregrip.

I think it would be great on a 50inch telly, crazy on a projector.

Would you buy and use one, or does it seem like too much effort holding a gun up the whole time?

Well, they've kind of been avaliable for about the last 30 years...........

(I loved Duck Hunt!)

Yes, there are more modern versions for PS Move/Wii etc. Look up PS3 Sharpshooter, think that worked with (IIRC) the last Killzone game.

Would they have real weight and ammo capacity as well?. No thanks, I would have empty magazines within the first 30 seconds of the start and sore arms after about 10 mins. hehe

It's weird though because in the game you turn on the spot and what-not - holding a gun you'd be looking at a blank wall or a confused wife pretty quickly.

I'm guessing you're young, and missed the lightgun craze of yesteryear? This probably peaked in the late 90's with games like Time Crisis and Virtua Cop and the famed G-Con controller. Then they seemed to hit an evolutionary dead end and died off. In the end, the hardware even had some cool tricks like force feedback, but it wasn't enough to save them and they went the way of most nice peripherals and faded into the annals of history. That said, the lightgun gave things a better go than most perihperhals, but I doubt they will ever come back.

Unfortunately, UK laws have got to the point where anything that looks like a gun is banned unless it is painted dayglow colours, or you are some part of a club.

Actually a previous poster hit the nail on the head, for it to be effective it has to feel like a real gun, not a plastic toy a 5 year old plays with.
With this comes the weight, and considerable expense.
Fun for 5 minutes, then you realise whilst you may be wearing a Rambo style headband and put camouflage make up on, you dont have the arm muscle of Stallone and a gamer pad is actually much better after all wink

Possibly. There is a Wii adapter thing that you slot the wiimote into and it makes a pistol, or an SMG or some such thing. Then the real hurdle is enjoying a game on that stty little console with PS2 era hardware.

I don't think we will see full size peripherals like replica assault rifles in the home, they would be just too big, too bulky and expensive and too limited for use. Not to mention, they'd probably make controlling the movement of your character difficult too. Not a problem on the old games like Time Crisis, but not something I think would work all that well today.

I remember way back having a gun game on PS1 it was jap import and was an Appleseed type cop game was pants but did have the gun as a Peripheral.

I think previous posts have hit the nail on the head. It would be an item that would have so limited an appeal it just wouldn't be financially viable to make let alone make a game around.

And as todays twitch shooters are all about speed, lifting even a light plastic one would be quite a chore after 30 mins.

Plus I can't remember the last "decent" on rails shooter I played smile

Saying that ,if you could do something as part of a VR setup that would be quite cool apart from the prohibitive cost.

If it was a gun as a controller to shoot things how would you move and do all the other actions? Buttons on the side or a seperate controller? Awkward and annoying id say!

Thats why time crisis etc, moved for you...

The gadget show did an "Ultimate Immersive Simulator" build with rollers on the floor to walk on, motion capture, 360 projection into a dome-tent type playing arena and even paintball guns to shoot back at you to add a real sense of peril - Will try and find it on youtube at home later

used to have time crisis on the ps1 I think, possibly mentioned above.

Was quite good fun, but you had no control over what the character was doing apart from obviously shooting and ducking behind cover.
It would be hard to have full control and having to shoot at the same time just using the gun I think!
Would be quite cool though

Exactly what the OP describes is available via PS Move.

Both the regular move controller and the motion nunchuck clip in, front hand controls movement with the joystick, rear hand the trigger etc.

Pointing the gun aims onscreen.

I really wanted to get it, but it seems it only worked with Killzone, which isn't my sort of game. BF3 would have been a very different thing!

I had 'Point Blank' game with my PS1, was a direct copy of the arcade game with the G-Con light gun. It was bloody epic!
Time Crisis too.
