Found these fixings rusting on the underside of the bonnet of a car only 2 years old and only 9000 miles. The car has had very little exposure to salted roads and parked up most of the winter time.
I do not think this should happen so quickly on a new car and would welcome any comments on the cause or info on any similar experiences.

Warm damp conditions under the bonnet after you switch the engine off...it's only surface rust on some cheap bolts, they may have been a bit rusty before they were painted/fitted.

The cause is they are painted torx screws which have been done up which has probably broken the paint and 2 years out in the elements has resulted in what you see, if you don't want that to happen get them black anodised.

Or give them a light sand and paint with some black hammerite, or similar.

light coating of hammerite or a little rust converter which would also make it turn black .... tiz nothing to worry about

Picture of other bolts in the engine bay. These are on a Bentley.

I have a similar age Range Rover Sport with similar fixings but all screws/bolts are unmarked.

I'm not sure what sort of answer you're looking for OP, if that is on a Bentley then go and see a dealer and see what they make of it.

I would be more concerned about your rad starting to look a bit scabby, rather than the bolts.

Has it been steam cleaned or washed with strong traffic film remover?

Black Internal torx drive screws are prone to rusting when fitted in external or semi exposed areas (not internal) because they are painted not plated. When fitted the torx driverused to fit them removes some of the paint from the torx drive which is where the corrosion spreads from. If they have lasted 2 years they have done well and exceeded the salt spray requirement. The root cause of this issue is the wrong coating has been specified for the screw to be fitted in a semi exposed position.
I would think 99% of owners would not even notice or care. Just dab some hammerite on them, will take under a minute to do.

What does it matter what I have got - also have 11 year old lexus so what.

The point is I have too similar age high spec cars one of which is rusting and the other not.

Bentley tried to suggest it was the local climate. Rubbish - we have had virtually no snow for the last couple of years and I am sure the same road grit is used al over the country.

Someone sensible said that there maybe a problem with the earth system on the car. There is corrosion elsewhere on the car such as terminals, alloy wheels, front grille fixings and more.

Educated comments please

Educated comment coming up - read the T&C's of you corrosion warranty, where you'll find it covers sheet metal body panels only

Are you the same guy who posted on here a couple of weeks ago with the same issues with his Bentley?

You could consider replacing the fixings with new ones, preferably not painted for protection.
