Went out in the rain earlier and the wipers slowed down and eventually stopped completely. Managed to get to a petrol station without crashing and, as I thought it was due to some kind of resistance, bought some windscreen cleaner. Gave the screen a good old polish and the wipers have been fine since. Does anybody else get this? It actually happened on another I test drove, but that may be a coincidence.

If I need to replace the motor, does anybody know what unit I need and is it an easy DIY? I'm useless with a spanner but can't run crying to a garage when stuff like this happens. It's a 96 400.

Cheers!

Beware - these cars have two completely different wiper systems, depending on model year. The earlier ones have the motor mounted in the rear-left corner of the engine bay, and later ones have it mounted inside the cabin under the driver's side dash. I believe they're different motors, and access to the later one is much harder.

Many people seem oblivious to this, so the danger is that you'll get plenty of well-meaning but irrelevant advice that's not applicable to your car.

I suspect your '96 could have either the new or the old system.

So first things first: we need to know where your motor is before we can tell you what you need.

Looks like it's the old system. Is it a DIY job do you reckon? My Mrs' dad is handy with a spanner, I can ask him to help me, if I could get hold of the part.

Ha! I should have said "depending on model year and whatever bits and bobs they had lying around at the time yours was built". smile

Mine's a '99 with the motor just above the driver's knees, so I can't personally offer any concrete advice - except to say that if yours is in the engine bay then access will be a gazillion times easier.

Get your original refurbished by Adrian Venn. Don't remove anything until you've been in touch as he'll provide all the info you need to replace it correctly and turn the spindle boxes over to provide new wear surfaces to the replacement worm drive he supplies.

Easy DIY when the time comes.

Wow, I wish I knew what you were talking about! My mechanical knowledge is shocking given my car choice. I will look up this Adrian fellow and see what he can do. Thanks.

Don't forget you can use a frotting pencil on the thrush-plate, rude to the look-out valve on the fumpspoke - and you can cut out the felching altogether, as long as you rim the satchel-arm properly first. Oh, and suck the clenching pin tight to the arc thrust, obviously. You do have a parping couplet, don't you?

Had the same problem with mine but it was a worn wheel box and rack not the motor. There is a removable panel under the dash for access (at least on my '97 model) but it's still a complete arse of a job. Cured it tho' and now they're like new. Wheel boxes aren't cheap tho' as they're getting scarse.

Cheers - wiping like a mad tonight, maybe it's OK after all. At least I sort of know what I'm up against if they do die.

Hi Mark, good shout on the invoices (I remember seeing it now that you mention it), I'll have a look. I'm expecting stuff to stop working now and again, don't worry about it. Sold as seen etc. Maybe it's a sign that I should stop driving it in monsoon conditions.
