New shed Volvo V40 T4

So I have been looking at various options to replace the S60 which is now on other duties. The V40 has always been under the radar for me and it was only a chance encounter with an ad at a dealer which led me to a test drive. That particular car wasn't great but it left a bit of an impression. Being a bit of a Volvo slut I was hooked on the idea. I found another locally that drove well but was shabby. Then last week an earlier car with history etc, looked ok but I was shocked how the phase 1 drove vs phase 2. FFWD to today and I found/bought this. It was over the marker of a bag of sand but not by much. Full history 2 owners and drives well. I love last generation Volvo interiors, they feel 'good' in a way that most cheap cars don't.

I have a few plans but in the short term basics need to be sorted. The hose clamps are shagged and it needs a clean and service. Overall though I have an irrational like for the shed already.

Absolutely. I think suspension/brakes are first to make the most of it. TBH they go pretty well stock.

Looks a decent example OP, really love the v40. My old man had a 1998 T4 for 6 years having previously been abused for 3 as a company car, other than engine mounts repeatedly going it never put a foot wrong despite spirited driving

I really like these. When my wife's Volvo v50 was being seen to I was given a tatty, phase 1 s40 as a loan car. It didn't have any badges and I assumed it was a 1.8 or some dull thing. Came to the roundabout that joined the motorway, gave it some beans and soon realised it had a bit more poke than a standard runabout. I really liked it, apart from the fuel economy, but I was using a lot of turbo so that would explain that.

I expect the phase 2 to be a lot better. Is the suspension still a bit brutal? I remember it handling surprisingly well, but big bumps crashed through the whole car.

Yours looks good and should scrub up nicely.

Always wanted my dad to get an S40 due to being a huge Rydell fan, these things always looked smart in both S and V forms.

Good cars, these V40s.

My mum had a 1.6 until last year and sold it with 225,000 miles on the clock and the engine still seemed to have lots of life in it, despite only one service in her ownership during which she covered 80,000 miles.

TBH its too nice to call a shed. I looked at three or four and this was easily the best one and drove very well. Things vary so muchh with each example and I found big differences in how they all felt, especially the suspension. From what I know about them which isn't much right now the phase 1 cars had a narrower track and the ride wasn't as good. On the flip side the 1.9 is supposed to be more tuneable than the 2.0 in this one, irrelevant as I will only ever give it a mild remap if I bother at all. Fuel wise they can be good (so I keep telling myself) and I think 28-30 is realistic if you don't hammer it all the time ad throw in some medium journeys. Picking it up in a week so will update this thread as I go, first shed in a while and looking forward to the experience

l had an identical age T4 & took it from 115k to 155k in 2 yrs & other than a rear brake caliper & a wheel arch liner, it was just normal consumables & regular servicing. BTW, mine averaged 34 mpg & shocked a few much more modern/expensive cars in 2 yrs ownership. A great purchase l think

Thanks! It currently has 110K and most of it is longer trips. You don't see that many around really.

Impressive power, shame it can't be put down on the tarmac very well!

OP, that looks a tidy example We've had two V40s: P1 2.0 Turbo and P2 1.9TD. P2 is a very well sorted car. Just watch out for dodgy stereo problems, our sub in the boot went a bit dicky. Everything else was fine.

The track is the same on the phase 1 & 2, the changes were 99% cosmetic. Under the body panels, the car is a Mitsubishi Evo 3 - Evo brakes, suspension etc all fit. The 1.9 t4 is a t5 block with a cylinder chopped off. The 1948cc engine in the phase 2 is a s/v70 lpt 5 cyl block with one cyl chopped off, however several people have tuned these to more than double standard power.

I've just bought a V40 as a daily shed - only a 1.8 but it was £600 with 6 months MOT and a months tax - I have only had it since Tuesday but I'm really taken with it already - there is something about its basicness that I really like, yet the seats are very comfy and the heater is epic.

This is my 25th car but first Volvo - I can already see me upgrading to a T4 in the future

the first Snap the second seize
had mine 5years so far and until the Lambda sensor packed in it has been very reliable and handy.
Spent very little on keeping it going
purchased at 97k now nigh on 150k.

I remember driving these when the phase one first came out. I worked at a Volvo dealer then. Apart from TC that tried to kill you by turning the engine off mid bend in the damp to produce more understeer than the QE2 they were fun. The Chassis couldn't handle the 1.6 so the 1.9T made me giggle a lot.

So picked the shed up tonight and within 10 miles the CEL came on, bks! Anyway on the plus side it averaged high 30's doesn't leak fluids and when asked to go up a hill surprised a rep in a 3 series. Comedy torque steer but a very decent stereo and seats almost as good as the S60. I'll pull the fault codes tomorrow but already have a little 'thing' for the little Volvo.

If your Codes point to Lambda failure
the genuine ones are spendy. but they are made by NGK
pull the old one to get the part number, I ordered via Amazon
saved 172 over a Volvo one.

Hopefully its something daft. The car has been sat around for a while so it could be anything really, it doesn't drive poorly and the original test drive didn't bring the light up so seems I was just unlucky (for a change).
