I'm starting a self build in the next few weeks. The open plan living room is separated from the dining/kitchen by a 2 metre wide wall which will house a gas fire. The obvious location for the TV is in that wall, above the fire, where the bottom of then TV would be approximately 4 feet from the ground.

So, the question, is that going to be too high and therefore should I try to find another location where I can have the TV at a lower height? The viewing distance is going to be approximately 4m.

Thanks!

There are quite vociferous pro- and anti- people on the subject.

My understanding is the "ideal" height places the vertical centre of the screen level with your eys when viewing.

The other thing to consider is the heat from the fire affecting the TV directly above.

I'd tend to agree with that. Or possibly have the TV slightly lower - so your eyes are level with two thirds of the way up the screen. Higher than that and I don't think I'd find it comfortable to watch. Depends on what chairs you have etc.

Doing some research it does seem to indicate your eyes level with the top of the bottom third of the screen. I think I may have to re-think the idea of TV on fireplace.

Other option is a drop down screen and projector - but not sure how practical that is for TV watching in daylight!!!

The former seems to come up a lot!

It really depends on how you sit!

If your a lofa, then although your eyes are lower, you will tend to look higher up the wall at that is where your head is most comfortable.

If you are a upright sort of guy, then although higher you will tend to look straight out or even down a little.
