Wind noise

I live quite near the cambridgeshire guided busway, which (when it's not underwater, at least) is supposed to be a lovely, wide, well-surfaced, straight, quiet path to ride on. And it sort of is, except for the wind, which I suppose is sort of inevitable on a path that's in the middle of a large expanse of dead flat, mostly unbuilt land.

I'm not complaining about it slowing me down - the last time I went out, it didn't seem to really (it was a fairly light wind).
It's the bloody noise. Loud and completely unrelenting. Halfway through I was starting to wonder which despotic regime was apparently desperate to get information out of me. Getting back onto roads shared with cars, houses, pedestrians was a massive relief - at least then there was variation in the noise.

So, given that, on the busway, provided I don't weave about like an idiot there's not much I need to know about what's going on behind me, would earplugs or earbuds help? I must admit I do miss having music sometimes, but the last (and only) time I tried riding with earbuds they magnified wind noise tenfold, to the point that at 15mph on a still day I couldn't hear a thing.

Or am I doing something wrong?

Is it your helmet straps? Do you have glasses on? could you put them outside the helmet straps instead of inside them?

It's Cambridge. The wind is unrelenting. It's been a relief to move to Yorkshire and swap hills for the wind. Get a buff and keep it over your ears. The psychological effect of wind noise is wearing.
