In an attempt to lower my current outgoings (but remain in a nice car) I am stuck on deciding whether to

A) Pay off the finance on my existing car (£9,771) and keep it for the foreseeable future.

Or

B) Trade it in for about £9,000 and get a diesel.

I do about 18,000 miles a year and the diesels I like cost around £14,000. My car does 38 mpg if I drive it slowly on the motorway, but any 70 / 80 mph driving makes that more like 30 mpg and most of my driving is motorway. Not a big one I know, but the tax is also £190 a year

Just don't know whether to fk it off now for a diesel or to stick with it.

I bought mine brand new and I don't think I'll ever buy new again - so I think it's making me more attached to my current car than I may be if it was bought used??

Any opinions welcome.

So it will cost you about £5000 to change cars.
Are you expecting to save >£5000 in fuel costs ...

I think you've got to decide what you want.

Sit down and work out all the costs and potential savings and see if the numbers add up.

Also you've got to decide were your priorities lie and what it is you want to attain.
