Hi, I'm vising from the s forum, some time ago my Speedo cable snapped in the gearbox , now I can't get the end out the circlip is removed and I am left with a dog eared plastic sleeve that won't come out, has anyone got any insight ? I figure there are more 2.8s here than at 'home' and the ford forum is asleep. Thanks

Not too scary - Depending upon which gearbox you have, to the best of my memory -
Both the gearbox types have a large core plug type cap on the opposite side of the cable outlet. Lever this off gradually with screwdriver and you should then be able to push out the drive wheel (backwards from cable side).

The (later) 'E' type box has cap near the top, and you can definitely do this without draining gearbox oil. The earlier 'B' type box has cap lower down, and I can't remember if it will pour oil out if you remove the cap - forewarned and all that.

Anyway you stand a much better chance of getting the dead cable end out when drive is on the work bench.....small nose pliers ?

Ok, thank you does the drive just push out ? And is that cap replaceable ?

The cap is reuseable, provided you are careful when levering out - it's just a tight push fit really. There is an outside flange on it which makes the job a lot easier than an engine core plug for example. A bit of gasket sealer perhaps when refitting ?
The speedo drive cog/assembly then pushes out from the speedo cable side (you need a thin screwdriver or rod/wire).

Can refit plug with a suitable socket and a few taps with hammer

I've just rechecked my workshop manual for both gearbox types, and I think BOTH boxes might pour oil out when removing the cap, so put a nice drainpan underneath, and with luck you can reuse the oil. Perhaps jack up the back of the wedge to reduce the amount of oil coming out - that's probably what I would do....

I'm not understanding the problem???

At least with a 2.8 and four speed, you unbolt the capture bracket and wiggle out the round bushing that holds the plastic and metal speedo gear shaft in place. The bushing and gear pop out (no oil). The speedo cable's square end just slides into the end of the gear.

I'm sure I'm missing something. Grady

Grady - you just made me read the original post again....Good point...

To clarify... I assumed that the METAL end of the inner speedo cable has broken off, and is stuck inside the cog drive inside the gearbox along with the remnants of the outer cable leaving a broken plastic sleeve and crap. I've had this happen to me on a Cortina. It's tough to get at it whilst under the car....
If that's not true, then I've gone off at a tangent, and apologise ...

B type 4 speeders have a 'keeper' bracket, but E type and 5 speeders have a circlip...

To recap the inside of the Speedo cable is in the plastic pinion, I now have the pinion out, I had to remove the cap and pull it out no major problem, thanks for yor help, now need to locate a new pinon as this one is knackered

Glad I was on the right track anyway....

If it's a 'S' then it's probably a 5 speeder (a Type 9) If so, then I beleive you can still get parts for the gearbox.

You need to count how many teeth there are (or were!) on that pinion, as there are 4 (5?) different ones, something like 21 to 25 teeth, to cater for the different diff ratios in the various Ford models....
