A friend of mine has approached me to find her a good Fiesta MK6 in purple. Being a woman NONE of these point are negotiable.

I have been looking online and she has a budget of 3k but I know hardly anything about Fords and even less about Fiestas. In my opinion it looks like a nice little hatch back and that's it.

I have been unable to find a buyers guide but I have read some reviews which seem complimentary if not a little thirsty for a car of this size. The new owner will be living in London but not driving in London, opting to drive to the south west or Yorkshire on a regular basis so I think diesel Is the way to go with the 1.4.

Any tips would be great, I assume check the cam belt has been done.

Ford cars in general have bushes as a weak point, and wishbones are also often made of cheese. Vibrations through the steering wheel can often be bush related. Rust could also be an issue, check places you can't see easily.

The 1.4tdci is agricultural and not a very nice engine, a 1.25 petrol would be my suggestion for someone wanting hassle free motoring its a much nicer motor and is economical enough if she isn't doing 15k a year +. Avoid the 1.3 8v petrol as its very unrefined.

Cambelts are 10 years or 125k on most fords but check for the specific engine you are looking at.

Zetec would be the best trim level but all but the most basic cars will have AC, fiestas of that age didn't have many toys. But the post 2006 (06 plate) cars are a bit nicer after a mid life facelift.

There are so many of them on sale it's easy to walk away even when lookin for a specific colour.

Not a huge amount to go wrong really. I have heard the 1.25 is underpowered and would go for the far more common 1.4 petrol which I had as a hire car once and it was a good all-rounder. Have heard bad things about the diesels too.

It's all very well insisting on purple but all you're doing is possibly rejecting far better cars. My favourite colour is Tango but I ended up buying an ST and they don't do them in Tango.

Thanks for that, looks best to avoid the diesel then, I know what you mean about the colour but she is female. No negotiating.

What have you heard? I have a 1.6tdci fiesta mk6 and a focus st. The fiesta is fine to drive if not a little bumpy compared to my focus, I get about 49mpg but mostly on short journeys. Apart from a coolant leak issue it has been fine.

I did a search on Google when I was looking round and pulled up several with issues. I have to accept that there is good and bad in every car and those with bad ones will post up and those with good won't but what I read put me off albeit I was pretty much already signed up to petrol as I don't like diesels. I'm averaging 30.9mpg in my ST which is fine as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure it's even bumpier too.

I have a 1.6 tdci Zetec s mk6 as well, owned it for 4 years. Bought it at 15k and now done 91k, worst mpg I have had is 55mpg and best nudging 74mpg ( admittedly a gentle M way run).

I too have only suffered a coolant leak, the thermostat housing was replaced a couple of months ago.

It has been an amazingly impressive car.

I'm sure this is all true but later, rather than sooner, you may have expensive injectors and DPFs to replace and servicing costs are going to be higher....and it's s diesel. I'll stick with petrol.

I had a ZS tdci from nearly new to just over 60,000 miles, the biggest thing that went wrong was the exhaust snapped in two and nobody could sell me a replacement quickly. Oh and the suspension made an Sline Audi seem well damped.

Based on that I'd buy another new one or one with plenty of warranty left but I don't think I'd buy a cheap leggy one unless the price left a nice chunk of cash to fix things that might break.

About a year ago my GF brought one as her first car and to be honest, I'm glad she did.
Because of a tight bugdet she went for the basic Finesse model with a 1.25 zetec se engine, from what I understand its one of the best engines to go for being co-designed by Yamaha like the Puma with an alloy block and variable valve timing?
Its coming upto 45,000 miles now and just completed its 10 year major service didnt really cost a lot if you do it yourself however its known that sparkplugs get rusted in engine and really needs an expert to replace the belts as its very involved.

That said it is a lovely little car to drive, it is fuel efficent but can also be very responsive and handles the roads well. I'm not too sure if there all built in Germany but I know our little one is and is put together really well!

To be fair theres not a lot down this part of the country, the gf tends to happily put her foot down heavily and it takes it obviously faster you go less economical.

I personally prefer to cruise along 55>65 mph, we've even done a day trip to France stacking the boot solid of which it happily coped.
