I've just sold my clio 172cup turbo and looking for something more track orientated with the idea of a st170 duratec powered westfield.

Am I right in thinking a starter kit is the way to go if I'm sourcing the bits myself?

Also is there a better alternative to the duratec?

Quick pic of my old cup

The Duratec is a good engine, but the Honda S2000 motor would be even better, but substantially more expensive.
They have a Westfield with the Honda unit in Complete Kitcar this month.

No doubt the s2000 motor is good but I'd be looking to keep the costs down where possible (I know it never works out like that wink )

New Black top Zetec is probably the way to go on a sensible budget. You can add throttle bodies, cams etc later.

Remember the ST170 duratec is not a Duratec, it is a Zetec with a vvc/vti inlet type head, so much easier to fit than a proper duratec as the type 9 / MT75 / T5 gearboxes bolt straight on and do not need a new bell housing but need an ecu that can control the vvc/vti actuator. Personally, given the hassle/cost associated with IVA and having been through SVA once with a Fisher Fury, and the cost of building a kit which you will always loose on, I'd look for a cheap already registered Pinto Westie and then spend you time/cash on upgrading in this order - brakes, wheels/tyres, diff, geabox and then Zetec/engine also get a full geometry set up.

Other engines to also look at are the:
1.8 mazda MX5 (and gearbox) - 140hp, cheap, plentiful and reliable and can be upgraded with a supercharger later
Nissan 200sx engine and gearbox - may be a tight fit but 200hp and load of torque easily achievable
Zetec SE from puma/focus - small/light but needs some new parts to fit an in line gearbox
The venerable k series (1.8 vvc possible) + type 9 - in a lot of caterham so 2nd hand availability good, needs bellhousing
Audi 1.8T + Type 9 - there are a couple of kits available to do the conversion
A bit more adventurous - v6 Duratec or Mazda KL v6 on eother Type 9 or MX5 gearbox
1.9 i4 BMW + gearbox - used in the GTD Legend - or squeeze in an M3 straight 6 !!!!
Loads of bike engine but Yamaha r1 is a favourite - will need to sort out a reverse for IVA IIRC.

Remember whatever engine you choose to have a look at the IVA requirements for injection, cats, reverse etc. as this may be a big factor in the cost (ecu sorting a main one, aftermarket or get the imobiliser working/deleted)

Just my pennies worth, take it or leave it but hope it helps.

I have just fitted a brand new blacktop Zetec into my Sylva Mojo.

Crate engine was £750, I sold about £250 worth of unneeded bits, and stuck on the GSXR750 throttle bodies / manifolds / Emerald ECU off my previous 1.8 silvertop install. A zetec is a cheap way to a brand new engine... should be around 170bhp.

If you are going to install the complete ST170 Zetec engine package including ECU, immobiliser etc. then it's not a bad plan, but if you are going for an aftermarket ECU then few (if any?) can control the VVC correctly (they are usually configured to use only full advance or full retard, nothing between). It's not a cheap engine to extract more power from either.

The Duratec engine as used in the later Mondeos etc. is a good engine, very light with plenty of tuning potential, but it's certainly not a budget solution.

The Vauxhall (C)20XE will produce excellent power with just bolt on parts (up to ~200bhp), the bellhousing for a Type 9 box is reasonable cheap and readily available. On the downsides, it's a pretty heavy engine and non-knackered examples they are becoming harder to find.

A standard 2.0L Zetec is probably one of the easiest and cheapest "modern" engines to fit, and is a well trodden path. Lots of support for these around, and they will bolt straight up to the Type 9.

MX5 engine and box gives you a very tough engine and a sweet gearbox (far nicer than a Type 9) for peanuts, though not overly powerful in standard form, and aftermarket tuning tends to concentrate on forced induction.

If you are not going down the IVA route and looking into re-engine an already registered car then I can recommned the Chester Sportscars Bike Carb conversion for the Ford range of engines. I had a 2.0l Silver Top Zetec with their kit on it and it pulled like a train (went for the high torque ignition map) was dead easy to fit and pretty price competitive. They now do this for the ST170 with VVC control and also the Zetec SE (std. 1600 Zetec SE is proported to make 143hp at the flywheel !). They sound really good too. These are no good for IVA unless your engine is pre 1992 I think (could be 1995).

First thing is decide what you want, a year or so in a garage follwed by the IVA. Great if building is part of the experiance, but it will still cost you £14k plus to get a good spec one. Or, do you want to drive it, this year? If so you can buy fantastic specced cars far cheaper than the build costs without the hassle.
Engine wise 2.0vx Zetec 2.0 Duratec are all fantastic engines and with the right combination will satisfy all on road and most on track. The Honda engined car will be the quickest but at a price with the engine and box alone costing £2.5K
