After god knows how long away from the books, I've got a bit of a design issue that is buggin me badly, so I've done as much reading around the problem as I can, but still think I've missed something, because the answer just doesn't feel right (I know, I know, trust the maths, but...)

I've got a steel bar 1600mm long, fixed at both ends, 31.8mm OD, 25.4mm ID, with 2 point loads of 1000N each at 500mm and 1100mm from the left hand hand. Minimum allowable shear stress for the bar material is 200MPa, most likely to be 290MPa. (ERW tube to BS6323 Pt5)

I think its good to go: I used beamboy to do the basic calcs, multiplied the max bending stress of 300MPA by .6, as Beamboy doesn't allow for simulation of fixed ends and from what I've read that seems to be a reasonable quesstimate, but that 300Mpa figure is worrying me.

What have I missed??
