I am warming to the idea of getting one of the new GL's and was wondering if anybody has any first hand experience of living with one on a day to day basis that they could share.

The spec, price, internal capacity really appeals and it looks ideal for towing my race car and all it's clobber when we race abroad. The ML package is not quite big enough for my needs.

They are super trucks.

I had an older (57) GL320 cdi One of the most reliable vehicles i've ever owned.

Great driving position and the rear most seats are proper adult sized. Even in the upright position, there's still room for a little luggage. The double sunroofs keep the interior feeling very light.

Parking sensors are a must have.

The vehicle felt "big" but in length only. They are around 5m long? I'm in a new shape BMW 5 series tourer, which strangely feels wider than the GL.

If i was going down the whole 4x4/truck route again, i would consider another.

Thanks Cinque. The first of the new shape

Im putting my name down for one by the looks.

New one is a similar length to the new L405 range rover so its not a small car.

I reckon as long as you dont have to squeeze into parking bays too often it shouldnt be an issue though.

Whilst not the new model, my parents have a GL350 cdi, which I have used pretty extensively. It's a big car in a car park but then again, so was the A8 I had - albeit not quite as long as the GL. It's great on long journeys although I think it's underpowered with that engine.

For what you're going to use it for, I don't think there are many better cars and the new one should be great. I test drove the new GL500 in the USA (badged as a GL550 there) which has the turbocharged V8 and it was excellent. The new model has a much better finish than the last model and the interior is top notch albeit perhaps not quite as attractive as a Range Rover.

As an everyday car it's great but you might want to have a smaller car in addition if you do lots of city centre driving.

we have been running GL's for the last 3 and a half years...fanatstic cars.
it is quite big, but my wife got used to the size very quickly and as said before sensors and reverse camera very handy.
have toyed with the new one, but has been the remapped 4ltr v8 diesels we have had, so defo need to try the new version with tweaked smaller engine before i think any further.
again, both of the GL's we had were very reliable and they have a fantastic road presence.
the full size 6+7 seats were the reason we went down the GL route, however with them up in place boot size does fairly shrink although still larger than the Q7, X5's etc with the 3rd row up.
hope this helps.
