Access with a flat battery?

Without going into detail here, I know roughly how to open the glass boot. What are you then supposed to do - climb through the car?

In a short answers yes. Lean through until you can reach the emergency door release. Be careful as the glass wont go up or down so dont slam the door shut.

I used a decently sized crowbar Hang through the boot and grab the emergency door handle with the curled up side of the crowbar and pull.
