I've been looking around for a well kept 996t and seem to keep missing out on them.

At the moment I have two in mind; One is a 2000 model and the other 2002. From what I know thus far, I'm leaning towards the older car since it has better history and genuinely seems to be in excellent condition.

However, the downside is that it's a very basic spec and doesn't have the 2001 updates which I understand to be interior improvements, added extras such as rain sensing wipers and chassis stiffness improvements.

Does the market look on the pre-facelift cars badly? I'm assuming there's probably 3k difference in value of the cars. Does that sound reasonable?

I don't think there is a £3k difference based on whether it's pre / post facelift.

The differences were pretty minor, and I don't think the market cares that much. Condition / Service history etc. is more important / will make more difference to price than whether it's pre / post facelift.

^^^^ this agree with davek..you can hardly call it a face lift - it was a mere glovebox and cupholder addition, who needs them on a sports car?...condition is more important!

There's also crappy sat nav, even crappier bose and probably a couple of other things I can't remember.

I take the point on history and condition though, and will focus on that when making a choice.

thanks!

Actually, no there isn't.

Mine is post facelift, but it does not have PCM - and hence no sat nav.

Linked with the other topic, the post facelift is a service every two years (if I am correct).

PCM was only standard equipment for the 2004MY onwards...I think.

Isn't 2 yr servicing MY04 onwards?
So to confirm there isn't any chassis development or structural change on the facelift cars? Hardly seems worth it for a glovebox!

The 996 Turbo was unveilled in late 1999 for 2000 model year.

The 2001 models gained electric switches to open the front and rear lids, and improved interior illumination.

2002 models were the so-called facelift cars, and included: glovebox, twin cup-holders, soft-touch plastics, better ventilation, Bose sound system, an auto-dim interior mirror and a rain sensor. (One Porsche magazine also stated in a buyers guide that the 2002 cars also included chassis stiffening/stregthening, but I haven't seen anything to confirm this).

All of these upgrades are nice things to have if possible, but difficult to put a £££ value on it.

Do check the early car has hollow spoke wheels. Quite a few of the early cars came with solid spoke wheels (think hollows were an option at the time). Easy check - rubber valves = solid spoke, metal valves = hollow spoke. (if you feel behind the spoke the solid spoke wheels have two channels - the hollow spoke are smooth).
Not that I've really noticed the difference (have a set of both, the winter tyres have the hollow's!) but it's something to check and a set of s/h hollows will cost you £500 and likely need a refurb.
they're rubber valves, and the wheels have recently been refurbished. I assume they're heavier, so less desirable?

Yeah, solids are heaver. About 3kg each, so a worthwhile saving. Like I said, most early cars have solids and I bet most people change to hollows and also change tyres, so difficult to get a pure difference in the wheel (unsprung saving).
But, as you say, solids are less desirable (may even be the same solid wheel on C4S's). With all the little bits different a early car has to be worth a few bob less than the later ones. If the early car has hollows and a nice new double din gizmo, then about the same.

Thanks for the info, most useful. The wheels is something I'd not considered, so that's another item to think about.

I think I'd have changed the sat nav/ICE anyway for an aftermarket item regardless of the age of car I chose, so I don't suppose there's a massive advantage in buying a factory sat nav equipped car.

Mine's a 2000 Turbo and has all the above as standard.

And soft touch plastics as well.

Never easy is it biggrin

Actually, there is an advantage to pre-MOST cars (late 2002). It's a lot harder to change the head unit if you're MOST. Mine is facelift but pre-MOST so I changed my head unit. But my Cayenne is MOST which means plugging an ipod in was a lot harder....

Your car may be a 2000 reg, but if it has those features then it will almost certainly (must?) be a 2001MY (model year) car.

(Mines a 51 plate but it has all of the 2002 stuff)

If you dig through old PH threads I'm pretty sure someone determined extra chassis stiffness of some form, whether it makes a difference or not is anyone's guess

The model year starts after the factory has come back from their summer holiday, August I think it is. So anything made after then is actually the following years model. It's not a calander year. smile

Are pre-2000 cheaper? I thought 2006 was the significant date.

Pre March 2006 much cheaper than post March 2006, pre March 2001 I think (X-reg) bit cheaper than 2001-2006.
