Classic Car VED Exemption extended one year to all 1973 Cars

Great news for all those Classic owners with 1973 manufactured cars.

In today's budget the VED Car Tax exemption has been extended one year to all cars manufactured before January 1st 1974 Therefore all 1973 cars do not pay any VED from 01 April 2014.

One of the only good things to come from the budget

Bit of a bummer for me though as mine was manufactured late 1974 so misses out . Any idea if it will be a one year rolling type thing or is it fixed?

Really? Surely the vast, vast majority of 1973 cars are bought and sold by people who expect to pay rather more than the VED on just general maintenance and running costs.

2.148 VED: classic vehicle exemption – The Government will extend the cut off date from which classic vehicles are exempt from VED by one year. From 1 April 2014 a vehicle manufactured before 1 January 1974 will be exempt from paying VED. (Finance Bill 2014)

If you had the choice of a 73 or 74 model which would you prefer to buy? (assuming idenitical model condition etc)

Free VED will always hold a premium.

you're preaching to the converted with me - my current (only) car is 1973, my previous but one car was 1973, a couple back from that 1974 and going back a bit a 1974 all within the time of 1973 cars being exempt

all were used as dailies too so I know all about running costs

ETA: I didn't put that to get at you but just to put out I agree and understand what you mean

This and making SORN indefinite are both very good news. We are currently trying to find out if the VED exemption is one-off or rolling and will let everyone know what we discover. We suspect the latter, I am afraid, however pointless it may seem to shift it one year and then stop it again.

Bare in mind it was intended to be rolling when it was introduced & one of the spiteful things the Labour lot did was freeze it. Mind you it was in their manifesto at the time.
My only concern is that it "identifies" a group that could be a focus point for different treatment in other ways. Such as happens in Belguim etc.

The entire Historic VED system already identifies a group that could get different treatment. Historic class VED was the worst thing to happen, I'd be happy if they scrapped it altogether; if we pay like everyone else then it would be much harder to retrict use of older cars.
