P38 Electrics!
Discussion
Hi All,
Help /advice needed please. I am very familiar with the many electrical gremlins the P38 has! However I have now had a new one appear that has me stumped! Recently stopped for fuel and when I restarted to drive away, the Satnav screen came up blank - just a dull all over white screen and the radio was muted (you can just hear the tuned station very quietly from the rear speakers. Have tried all the obvious tricks including removing the 10A fuse in the drivers seat that controls the radio/satnav etc but when it is replaced the problem is still there. It seems as though the satnav has somehow "muted" the radio but not certain this is it. Not too worried about the satnav as I don't use it, but the radio is another issue.
Any clues or advice welcomed please.
Many thanks,
Sov

The SatNav screen usually goes like this when power is removed from the SatNav unit in the boot before it has powered itself down - most common cause is disconnecting the battery immediately after turning off the ignition. It's usually terminal for the SatNav unit I'm afraid but not for the radio! Try removing power to the SatNav unit by pulling the appropriate fuse to see if it releases the radio mute, otherwise pull the unit and remove the connectors from the back.

Thanks Garvin, I have already pulled the fuse that powers the radio and satnav but still no change. When you say "pulling the power off the back" do you mean from the satnav screen unit in the dash, or the boot unit? Any tips on removing either please? Thanks for your help.
From the back of the boot unit - you'll need a couple of those 'U' shaped release tools to unclip the unit and pull it forward. Due to some unathomable design flaw the interior circuit boards have a habit of frying themselves under certain situations - seems like yours has and the voice lines, which also mute the ICE, have fused on. Pulling the plugs on the back of the unit should restore volume to the rest of the system. Many thanks Garvin, will try this once the weather improves! I am reluctant to disconnect the battery as I believe this can cause many other problems and I do not have any of the codes required that are mentioned in the manual, other than the one for the radio. Also removing the fuse appeared to isolate the units without any success. Will tackle the boot unit first and see where that gets me. Thanks again to you both.

I used to have the mute function appear a few times. And disconnecting the battery always worked for me.Sovereign said:

Turn the ignition on and then off first. Then you have 30 seconds to disconnect the battery.I've done it a few times on mine with no problems.
