Went over to my preferred garage today to get them to sort my leaky manifolds-to-y-piece and while I was there I said that I was thinking of getting the cats removed ...

"Well your precats are probably out already." came the reply "The cans have been cut open and rewelded ..."

A quick piece of wire shoved up the manifold through the manifold to y piece join later to confirm and bugger me - they're not there.

Oh well ... just thinking of getting the main cat chopped now but have been warned that it'll probably be a bit too loud if I do... biggrin

I am told that a change to a slimmer Y piece will stop the cathedral like echo, but perhaps you want to sound like a TVR Salisbury?

Definitely in two minds ... there's a nice exhaust place just over in wilton that can make me a nice custom exhaust with whatever "silencers" I want (or modify the original one) if it's too loud I suppose.

As I understand it, the Y piece and the main pipes/silencer are two separate sections. The Y piece contains the main cat, and removing it makes the noise much louder and rather rough sounding. Instead of removing just the cat, if you remove the Y piece and put a Clive F Y piece, or an ACT one, in its place, you will have more power but only a modest noise increase, so long as you leave the silencer under the car well alone.

Good subject for a chat tomorrow?

That is correct...

This is what I'm told - but apparently replacing the cat with an inverted cone removes a lot of the echoey roughness... biggrin

Much cheaper to pick up a decatted standard y-piece. wink

No, I meant a chat with someone who DOES know what he is talking about. I wouldn't be able to get more than six words out between coughs at the moment. I am SOOO pissed off with coughing furious

LOL - I suspect that the remaining attendees assembled collective of testosterone and clanking nads might be able to string a few words together between us but hey... biggrin

You can weld a insert in the original cat ,like a funnel, this will stop that horrible sound .Other than that its clive`s Y piece or the ACT one .

You can also wrap the Y piece which will help

De catted my manifolds earlier in the month and bugg3r me if it wasn't the nastiest wrist shredding pain in the balls drilling and hammering dust inhaling I wish I hadn't stared this job ever...

If you can get a third party to remove them for you go for it. If not then prepare for grazed wrists ahoy.....!

Is there any scrap value in the pre cats? I know some cats are quite valuable because of the metals used and I kept all the bits that came out of mine just in case!

They use platinum, so should have some value - you need a specialist precious metals scrappie at a guess

  • chuckle* You must have tried *EVERY* exhaust combination there is now!
I reckon I'm gonna go for a main cat decat too and *IF* it's too agricultural then take a wander down to the local Torque Technique (http://torquetechnique.co.uk) and get them to pop a couple of cherry bombs in. biggrin
