Price out the window...
Family/home/takeaway scenario for four;
Do you prefer a Chinese Chicken curry all to yourself?

Or do you prefer to partake in a buffet style experience where everyone gets dished up a bit of whatever they want, from a selection of several dishes, so you have a number of different flavour experiences on your plate?

Buffet style for me, personally.
A single dish isn't quite a Chinese experience, for me. Maybe Im greedy, I just prefer a bit of everything. Prawn toast. Few pork or chicken or prawn balls. Spoon of rice. Bit of Chow Mein. Seaweed on top for those that like it. And a spring roll perhaps. Then a rib and a goats eyeball. (Goats eyeball bit not serious)... Each to their own. What do you prefer?

Vote like a Viking, with your horned helmet standing tall, as you announce your place in the society of takeaway taste-bud experiences.

Not in the food section please mods. Its a socio-preferential analysis Im undertaking, the results will be most clear when the thread is cast amongst the plebs of the lounge, and not amongst the food-connoisseurs of the food and drink forum. Thank you.

Here's my Chinese take-away problem. I am buffet or nothing, like you.

Trouble is, at most, I am buying for two people, and sometimes just for myself.

So, when I arrive at the place, my ordering goes like this 'one of those, one of those, one of those, quarter of duck (always, obviously), one of those, hmmm....oh, and one of those....um, and some of that.

Oh, and feck it - one of those too.'

Then when it's ready, they pull two huge bags of stuff onto the counter, and ask me for around £30 yikes

I get home, and it takes maybe 10 minutes to get it all out and onto the table.

Buffet experience is go.

Then, after my G/F has had her miniscule, sparrow's serving, and I've gluttoned enough to keep me in calories for a week - there's still tonnes left. Some of it CAN be kept for the next day, but a lot of it doesn't keep well, so it goes in the bin.

It's an expensive luxury.

I would be delighted if one of the take-aways realised this, and did small portions - half the size or less of the regular trays.

Thing is, I would be happy to pay a little bit more than half the cost for half the portion if you see what I mean? So instead of paying £4.95 for a standard tray, I would be happy to pay £3 or £3.50 for half. That way, my bill would be smaller, none would get wasted, and the take-away makes a bigger margin on each dish sold?

Sounds like a winner to me, no??

lots of stuff
The solution might be in the set meals.
However, I have never, ever ordered one, because 2 or 3 of the 5 or 6 things in the set meal, aren't my top choices. So it becomes a case of ordering a bit of everything (or not) depending who you are eating with.

Buy several dishes to make up a buffet, then eat them all yourself.

In/out for 2-4 order own meal.

Above 4 try to get the spinning table, then a free for all, but I get all the king prawns.

Chinese meals are always best with groups (IMO) of 4 or more so you can have a bit of everything, when getting my own (when not eating CSV) I tend to get a Special chow mein & Fr because it has a bit of everything in it.

Lol, etc.

Well rice goes hard, and is one of the dodgiest foods to keep and re-use, it's a bit of a breeding ground for bacteria I hear. Sesame prawn on toast also goes hard. Ribs dry out. And meats like duck, I don't think I'd trust re-heating the next day either.

Even the prawn crackers go soggy!!!

Nope it gets recycled over 3-4 days in our house, rice & all. Yup prawn crackers go hard & we wouldn't do ribs. But curry & lemon chicken & Beef & black bean are fine. If we run out of rice then the missus either cooks more or makes some Gary to go with it.
Mrs is Afro-Carribean & it is common in these households to reheat rice in a microwave over several days. If it poisoned you there would be lots of dead people around!

I'm a buffet style chap myself. If anyone has seen that Simpsons episode where Homer goes to an all you can eat restaurant and takes the whole tray out of the buffet table for himself then that should give you an idea of how much I can put away. I don't stop when I'm full, I stop when I hate myself.

I prefer the buffet experience, but usually I'm just buying for my wife and I, in which case I just buy two mains, two chips and maybe a side. I eat mine, then scoff most of hers. I prefer Indian takeaways these days, not just because I've got a really ace Indian takeaway nearby, because I have a top drawer Chinese takeaway too, but because I think for a little more money you get a more filling meal and what you don't eat survives overnight well and tastes just as good in the morning.

I buy enough for a buffet but shove it all in a fruit bowl and eat it all myself.

I pile up my plate and completely over face myself. Optimum number of dishes for me on one plate is 3 or 4. Otherwise it's a bit of a quagmire.

I managed half of this the other week.

We love a decent buffet, but nearby there is also a takeaway that does a special offer on a Tuesday which is 5 dishes for £11. All full size dishes from a set menu, but none are the sort nobody orders.

In London most of the buffet places do take-out. So you go in, pick your box (or boxes) and then you pay either by box (generally) or weight (only seen that once).
