Classic steam solution. You need to be online to set it offline.

I've tried clicking up there, it complains that it couldn't connect to the network, and offline is unavailable because there's no local log in information.

That's exactly what I mean!

You need to be connected to the network to then be able to tell steam that you want to play offline.

Totally logical.

Obviously, when you don't have internet, and can't connect to the network, you just want to have a simple play of the game you paid for but can't because Steam won't run it because it can't check for updates and all that bullst.

Any way of forcing it offline?

Offline mode was fixed a few months ago (after seven years of waiting), you should be able to click on start in offline mode when you are unable to sign in.

Unplug the router, turn off wifi or unplug cable from desktop.

start steam and you will see this popup, click start in offline mode.

Keep Steam open and put PC back online, you will still be in offline mode when you go back into Steam.

Have you ticked the boxes for remembering your login information (username/password) when you log in?

Then try again?

The box says DON'T remember my login information, with a note underneath saying it will disable offline mode.

When was the last time you logged in online, you have to do it occasionally. Is steam up to date, they fixed a lot of offline mode problems a while ago.

All the time, it won't allow me to go offline.

The box is unticked.

The appears to be NO fix for this currently, it's not affecting many people but Offline mode has been broken since the 19th March update.

Not good for me, a laptop user, with limited internet connectivity.

I've contacted Steam, no response for 5 days now. Not good enough IMO!

I basically cannot play any of my Steam games at the moment.

A Beta fix was released and emailed to me last night, seems to have worked! I'm not sure how long patches stay in Beta for, but I can't see it being too long before it gets full release.

If anyone is depserate (as I was) I can describe how to apply the Beta Client?

They fixed it just in time for Bioshock Infinite!

biggrin
