First time we are going and we dont want to spend all day on the blinking motorway, can anyone give me the best route avoiding tolls?

That's what I've always done. Buy a decent road atlas of France and take your pick. Gazillions of possible routes, with very few speed traps and lots of nice villages. Just allow a bit longer for the journey...

Defo worth doing.

As said above, or set your sat nav to avoid motorways.

So many ways to go, pick a route that looks good, stop off at a nice place to eat, have a great drive.

Will take about 8-9 hours though instead of 7ish.

Depends on what port you are going to go from, I,am on Eurotunnel Wednesday morning going coast route stoping at Le Treport for lunch, then onto Ouistreham Pegasus bridge then staying in a hotel overnight, next day up to St Mere Eglise where the paratrooper landed on the roof . made famous by the the film, then twisty roads to Le Man arriving 1 ish nice and fresh to put up tents then have a few beer

Last six years I've been via Cherbourg.

Two years ago we had three days doing the D Day museums, cemeteries, Pegasus etc.

It is something that everyone should do at some point. Quite mind blowing.

Superb routes going south from there too, avoiding the motorways.

Going via tunnel this year on Thursday so will look for some twisty routes along the way.

Depends on where you arrive in france, but the route using the d438 from rouen is shorter and much more interesting than the motorway and given clearish roads can be faster.

Agree with GT6 the old N138 now renamed and downgraded has long been a great route from Rouen but i always get at least one fine normally outside berney or sees !! Great route tho and worth the risk for the excitement
