anyone owned a herald?

Rust mainly - engines are cheap enough to get runing right and you just sit on the front wheel and work on 'em.
Outriggers are a bad point on the chassis ... but you want a Vitesse really - albeit cost a bit more money to buy - but a straight six would be nice ... no road tax either and extremely cheap insurance.
Get one - but get the BEST you can afford for your budget. It'll pay dividends and ensure easy resale one day.

cheers for that Mikey. Very handy. Know about about the engines as I gave one away to a friend last year

Vitesse very nice but still like the purity of the herald, particularly the front end. The fact it couldnt pull the skin off chicken is part of the charm too in a perverse way.
Outriggers are the bad point - just like looking for a TVR then

I used to restore them
used to be able to do a front outrigger in about 45 minutes
Of course I'm much more lazy now
Definately go for the vitesse, not only because of the glorious v6 exhaust note, but you can easily upgrade the rear suspension from the frankly appaling swing axel to a rotaflex (bizzarre triumph version of decent suspension)
Alternatively, how about a Sunbeam Alpine
Let me know if you're serious, I can sort you out

would be covered or garaged and only used on long sunny days, handy to know though

Although don't do this and imediatley nip out for a 2,000 mile drive round europe and expect not to get wet **
** Absolutely no points for guessing how I know this

only you mate, only you

Will definately be in contact if I go ahead with the idea. Not looking at spending much at all, guess thats part of the idea. Seen a mint 38k from new one on autotrader for peanuts and thought it would be a cheap fun car and unlikely to lose a bean on depreciation. The added bonus is dirt cheap insurance and no road tax, plus good mpg so really would be a cheap weekend toy
