Private Cosmetic Dental Care

Evening all,

My better half would like to get a tooth moved/straightened. It's her upper right canine and is currently set back a little compared to the others.

Neither of us are powerfully built company directors so don't know what our best options would be. Who would be the best people to go to for advice? What are ballpark figures for this sort of work? Any recommendations in the South East?

Just mulling things over so would appreciate any helpful advice.

I have a brace fitted, 6 Month Smiles. That was option 2 of 3 (train tracks at one end, Invisalign at the other). Cost was £2k with a fixed retainer at the end and a bit of prep work before fitting (two fillings), a hygienist visit, scale and polish plus a monthly checkup

I knew I wanted either Invisalign or 6 month smiles so just looked locally at who could provide them privately

She could ask her dentist to refer her to a local private (assuming it for cosmetic rather than clinical need) orthodontist who can assess and then present the options, including the long term success prognosis. Canines do have a history of returning to their previous position so it may be necessary for a permanent fixture or trimming the tooth down and fitting a crown to give the illusion of a correctly positioned tooth. My wife got an inman aligner to straighten something similar on her top teeth.

Cost was far less than invisalign, and much quicker. Results were the same (very good).
Able to do a direct comparison between the two as she had invisalign years ago but after completion (stupidly) stopped wearing the retainer to maintain position, and they moved back!

Plenty of uk places do the inman.

I had Inman aligner, the first stage with the actual aligner is a bit of a mouth full, but only for a short period, the less hours a day you wear it, the longer it takes!

Ok, she's visited the first practice and been quoted £4300 for ceramic braces top and bottom fitted for between 12-14 months, a fixed retainer is fixed behind her teeth after this, and a removable retainer to be worn at night. Three years aftercare is included.

Does this sound ok?

Its hard to compare but my teeth a like a blown fusebox, I was quoted £3500 for 12-18 months with a permanent wire fitted behind my teeth afterwards. He said this included everything, a polish afterwards etc etc. He explained some of the 'cheap' internet voucher site offers you see don't include follow ups so the cost quickly mounts up.

The quote was for braces with white wire so looked less obvious. A week after the quote I was posted a special summer offer which brought it down nearer to 3k.

Sadly I spent the money on changing car instead so I have to save up all over again.

Oh, I think they would take an £800ish deposit and do the rest on interest free credit.

Sounds about the same ballpark of cost/time quoted for invisalign.

For comparison, the inman aligner was around 1/3rd of that (top or bottom), and also took a fraction of the time.
The time was the major factor in the decision for my wife- 1yr+ of wearing braces was just too much. A few months, however was bearable.

Also remember that a fixed retainer/wire means no flossing.

She was told that alternative options (Six month smiles etc) weren't suitable for her. We can now see that it's not just the one tooth that needs moving, lots of teeth need to move in lots of directions (albeit fractionally) to align everything.

She was impressed with the surgery so think that's what she's going to go for, she just wants it sorted for our wedding next August.

Mine are due to come off on Tuesday, it's almost 6 months to the day after I went in. My upper left and right laterals were a bit fangy, they'd grown outwards and rotated a bit, which from about the age of 18 I was always funny about. Really glad I've done the brace thing, at the same time really looking forward to it coming off. It has been worth it, but I'm hankering for a decent curry, an apple and some pretzels!
