while ago i bought a moon XP300 and shield 60 light set. i had a fault with the rear which was replaced but now my front appears fked.

red light was flashing so bunged it on charge....the blue circle charge indicator didn't flash like normal but just stayed blue.....riiiiight

well, a few hours later i unplug it and turn it on.....yep, a few seconds later, the red light is flashing.

for fk sake. i bought them in November and still have the receipt but no idea whether the bike shop will replace it. i'm really impressed with the light, it's more than powerful enough but build quality doesn't seem amazing.

any thoughts on what might be wrong....sounds like a battery issue??

should i still be able to get a replacement 4 months on? i'd expect a circa £80-90 front light to last more than 4 months to be honest!

if they won't refund/replace it, i'll buy another light. can anyone recommend a similar priced front light? i don't need any more than 300lumens in reality but certainly don't want any less.

thanks

You've not stated what you paid so hard to give a comparison, but I bought a Lezyne Macro Drive; which gives a choice of 150, 300, 450 lumens or pulse or flash modes.
The 150 mode lasts 6 hours or so and got me through the St Crispins overnight no bother, the 300 mode sees me home on my unlit A/B road commute at 11PM with good beam dispersion.
Not had to use the 450 mode as 300 is enough(at the pace i ride) and the battery seems to go beyond the oem specs.

He has - £80ish - so significantly more expensive than your Lezyne.

At that price, if the LBS didn't get it sorted, I be heading off to trading standards on a matter of principle, as there's no way that could be considered fit for purpose.

Having said that, surely it must have at least 4 months' guarantee on it?

I use a Moon 500 as a helmet light and its been good BUT run time is lower than stated; the low charge light comes on after half an hour!

I replaced a Light and Motion 500 thingy which was utterly useless and L&Ms customer service was not only hopeless, they were borderline offensive. Luckily my LBS was good and changed it.

Hope 1 maybe? Bombproof, similar output and price. Ours lasted ages.

went back to shop this morning as only working the afternoon/evening today and they replaced FOC.

as said, had to replace the rear earlier in the year due to water ingress through the charge point (design flaw IMO and i've gone over it with insulation tape) and so i'm not impressed with build quality.

I LOVE the lights though, the rear genuinely makes me feel SO, SO much safer at night on some of the roads i ride home on (at points, no street lighting pitch black country roads so a good rear light is a must) and the front is more than bright enough i very rarely use 300 lumens.

if one breaks again i shall try to keep getting replacements hoping they'll honour at least 12 months but i won't be buying another set, i'll look elsewhere for some similar (or brighter) output lights.

This is pretty much my view too. Absurdly bright lights, seemingly well built, and under £25. The Chinese charger with dodgy UK adapter isn't something I'd probably want to leave plugged in unattended, but the lights themselves are amazing!

Moon is actually a Raleigh brand and customer service seems good.

Sometimes I find a 1700 lumen bar light and 500 lumen lid one aren't enough when off road! You don't need nearly as much on road.

Not convinced by these cheapo Chinese imports claiming big numbers.

From my experience, they are extremely bright! I assume they're being sold that cheaply because they've not gone anywhere near costly CE testing and the like rather than because they're not as bright as they claim...

these lights are mainly used for road riding to be honest, if mountain biking.....it's always day time hehe

the only reason i want something pretty bright is because of the unlit roads riding home. for me, i think 300 lumens is enough.

but.....now i want more hehe

if this one packs up i'll buy something brighter. there is a section which can be quite scary as the road is very rutted and during the day it's fine as you can avoid it easily. at night, in the cold and wet.....it's, erm, interesting! hehe

cheers Vlad.

I have a T6, which claims 1600 lumens. On club group rides (15 riders), I only know of 1 bloke with a brighter light. I think his is an ebay job as well though!

It's because they gain a commission from, say Magicshine, and after they have fulfilled their obligations to the commissioning customer, they just keep on producing the lights for their own sales outlets. So the lights are likely to be identical to the branded ones except when the manufacturers find themselves no longer able to source certain components, at which point they start to substitute any/cheaper alternatives.

As it happens, the ones I bought originally for ~£30 were not nearly as good as the most recent ones a lot of us were buying for ~£17 delivered. Regardless, I have no "confidence" issues with any of them even though one of the chargers has stopped working (completely dead) from the original batch.

Mine was properly tested for lumens and lux. £300 well spent IMO. Good quality spread of light too; cheapos usually have a dead spot/ring of light.

Same with torches; yes you can get big power copies but a Surefire or Fenix will last many times longer, use a decent quality light control unit and be properly tested to back up lumen claims.

The copies/Chinese lights suit many and I'm glad they are so accessible but they aren't for all. On the other hand some are just a rip off; most Lupines for example.

Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting that they weren't good quality - just that they haven't generally gone through the expensive testing process to prove that they are.

Ah but that was my point - the originally manufactured ones will have had to, in order to be sold in outlets over here. The Chinese knock-offs will **originally** be made to those same standards, by the same people, and from the same components UNTIL they start replacing components with alternatives.

I was agreeing with you in a roundabout sort of way... they *probably* are fine but you can't tell really.
