Ok just realised I did something a little silly at the weekend.

The BMW said it would like a small oil top up (seems to like 1L every 3000 miles or so). No problem I had a 1/2 litre of Castrol Edge 5w40 kicking about with some BMW approval on the back of the bottle. So I threw that in. Then I remembered I'd opened that to top up the old Diesel Avensis and it was "turbo diesel" oil.

I think it'll be fine, particularly given the frequent requirement to top up anyway. But there is some doubt in my mind.

Am I right?

I'm guessing diesel specific engine oil has more chemical X in it to hold all the soot in suspension? Surely that would benefit a petrol engine too? Especially a very rich running turbo engine!

It'll be fine, not something I would lose any sleep over.

Thanks guys. Thought it was a silly concern.

Also I've managed to soak most of it up with some sand I put in the air intake to port the head. Some trouble getting it out the sump, so took the head off and used a hose down the oil ways.... anybody know a good mechanic.
