Battery replacements and 'the wing'
Discussion
Well, managed to get a replacement 'in', well, kinda... sits on top of what looks like a nut type mounting on the bottom of the battery plate, so not quite flush... Not necessarily a problem in its own right, but for replacing the batwing - the fin-like part wont slide between the airbox and the battery now, because what used to be all of a 10mm gap seems now to be taken up by cables and gubbins...
Can anyone shed any light? I'm thinking I'm missing something in the battery bay... Is it a nut thats rusted onto the bottom plate? Does that fin/separator need to be on the wing? Am i just doing it wrong

Each time I have removed and replaced the battery on mine, I dread it because I don't know how I get it in our out! I don't use the holding L bracket, because the battery sits wedged against the 'rusty' nut. It just takes a lot of wiggling around to get it jump over the nut and seat properly (provided the dimensions of the battery are okay of course
).
I sometime put a strap around the battery (long edge) which can help to lift the edge that disappears into the wing, which in turn helps to get the outer edge seated properly.
Not sure if any other that makes any sense, or indeed whether it is even helpful!
Good luck with it!

I'll get wiggling

So what battery is it?
Sorry, yes, went with an Odessy. Red Top was voted best but lots of bad press about recent manufacturing changes, and other options were based on value for money, but thought I'd opt for something more able to deal with deep discharge...Still not tried wiggling it in, but looks like I'm 10mm out

I found the PC1500 a very tight fit, a PC1230 would fit with room to spare. I no longer have the captive nut welded onto the plate at the bottom of the battery tray as it rusted away to nothing. I don't recall if I faced the same issue you describe as this was a long time ago.
Measure the battery and measure the tray to see if it will fit.

I'm torn between the yellow top and the odessey. Still not tried wiggling it in, but looks like I'm 10mm out

I removed any brackets a long time ago when i had the red top.... the AA were called this morning and if I linked wires up to my misses mouth she would produce more AMPS than alternator is chucking out at the moment.
I fitted one of these at the weekend. Not the most powerful out there but works fine.

It was a snug fit, so I filed an angle onto the rusty nut to help ease the battery down onto the base.

Cutting the Nut seems to be the way to go

Seems some will fit, mine is a "snug", I cut the small nut/hole in half & it holds it tightly in place.
Jack's 086 is the best bet as its a straight forward fit(terminals).
I fitted a 096 as I had it here already & have a battery brain fitted + 35mm earth leads so was moving it to help it (BB) fit.
