EGR valve help - Focus 1.6 TDCI
Discussion
Wondering if anyone can offer any advice to a friend who's having problems with his car.
59 reg Focus 1.6 TDCI (old shape) circa 50,000 miles.
Engine management lamp came on one evening last week. Told them to drive home carefully (just under two miles). It cut out and wouldn't restart before they made it home. They called the RAC who got them up and running. I asked what e did but my (clueless re cars) friend wasn't paying attention! He has said that the RAC man thought it would be an injector or the EGR valve but much more likely to be EGR.
Car is now driving fine again and no warning lights.
Has anyone any advice should the problem reappear? Wynns seem to do an aerosol cleaner but I'm always wary of stuff like that! More so when it's essentially going to dislodge a load of carbon deposits straight into the DPF filter!
What causes them to block up? Is supermarket diesel a contributing factor as I know that's what they use exclusively!

Supermarket diesel won't make a difference. They just get very dirty. You can clean these, but I've never tried the sprays like Wynns you mention. I've taken them off to clean, so you know it's done properly. Just make sure you don't take any screws off the stepper motor. Two bolts holding the whole thing to the engine plus the pipe clamps in+out. I think it's an OK job on a focus. Absolute nightmare on the same engine in a Pug 307! You may need to reset the fault code for the car to work properly atferwards, but I've got away with a few not needing a reset.
These engines need a good burnout every now and then. Normally say 20 mins on the motorway in 4th the clean them out. Failing that, it's taking it off and cleaning it, although that's is a b
h on those engines (iirc it's built into the inlet manifold)
This final option would be to block it off.

Had constant issues with the EGR on my Mondeo. For 3 years once a year I was paying 300-400 for a replacement before I decided to have a go myself.
It is very easy to remove yourself; I started doing it every 6 months by totally removing it, covering it in WD40 and leaving overnight. Once I started doing this I went just over 2 years from the last change to when I sold it without any issues.

Could be a load of things those engines are terrible best thing to do is get rid and buy something without that engine, its a Peugeot engine and keeps me in a job due to some many problems with them most leading from a 1 quid copper washer from the injector.
Most common are failing injector seals which goes unchecked can lead to terminal engine failure.
Poor servicing lack of oil changes blocks the oil ways to the turbo results in oil starvation then onto turbo failure which is left long enough can destroy the engine.
Town driving will clog the egr valve up and also the DPF to.
Injectors are another weak point
Last on the list are air leaks on the intake system which is less serious.
Avoid that engine like the plague I can't think of another engine that is as bad as the 1.6tdci/hdi (in the pug models).
Edited to add that the 1.8 tdci engine is totally different from the 1.6 version and are actually not a bad engine.

Hi guys
having a similar issue, fitted a brand new egr valve on my mums 1.6 diesel. Was okay for about a week, then the light came back on, no change in power. I put a basic code reader on it which generated a code telling me the egr is stuck shut. Which I thought fine, engines only gonna get clean air. However she drove it the other day, got into third at about 2500 revs and the car cut out completely but restarted straight away. Put the code reader on again and it still says egr stuck shut.
Checked various things, made sure all the boost pipes are in tact, checked the pipe work from the egr to the inlet, its a bit sooted up but not bad enough to cause it to cut out.
Any ideas?
cheers guys.
