Hi,

Has anyone done on heard of a steering wheel modification to bring raise the height above the knee's? I'm 6ft and my legs are pretty close to the bottom of the wheel. I suppose i could go smaller (wheel that is), are there any favored wheels, types etc. Done a bit of research over the past few days but cant find much at all.

Thanks

Sifly

Hi, the 944 has the same problem, I bought one from a 6' plus guy who loved the car but just couldnt get comfortable with so little leg clearence between himself and the wheel. Yes you could change the wheel for a smaller diameter one, though it would probably have to be a non porsche item, maybe a nice racing style Momo wheel.
Log on to Demon Tweeks or similar, there are loads to choose from. You would need to buy the correct 'boss' also to then fit the wheel to the car. Some of the modern style racing wheels have a flat bottom edge. Although this would look a bit naff in a classic 924, it would at least make getting into and out of the car a bit easier!!

Keep the original wheel for re-fitting when you come to sell the car on.

Another option would be to fit racing style bucket seats which would sit you lower in the car, but these might not the most comfortable seats on a long drive and would be a much more expensive option!

Thanks they are some good points, the seat i didn't think of. Surely they are a VW spline?! i've joined the 924 forum/ club so they might also have some ideas. Agreed, keep all the bits.....i bought it as a future classic so intend on keeping it for as long as possible, whether it will ever increase in any great value is another question, but i remember being able to pick a 914 up for a song! so here's hopeing, it joins the 996 anyway as a small non fancy collection!

In my race car I fitted a much smaller wheel and as well as the steering Boss I fitted a quick release kit as well, this gave about another 2 inches of reach which helped as being about 6ft myself I found the pedals where too close to the wheel and to get my legs right meant the wheel was too far away, but also as the steering column is angled the extra reach also gave a bit more clearance under the legs. It stil wasn't ideal but it was the best solution plus removing the wheel made getting in and out much easier.

Some good ideas!. The removable wheel with boss is decent as you say it pulls it out a bit which might help. There seem to be plenty on the market, plenty of guff as well. I suppose really a 320mm with a thinner construction might be the thing to keep it looking semi-like the original thin effort. Allegedly its a MK1-2 Golf spline, which makes life easier not that there isn't any 924 bits around.

Couldn't get that link up, must have to register.

Thanks for the input

You do have to register, but it's open to non-members for free.

Check you haven't got the spacer blocks fitted to the seat mounts, if so the seat is an inch higher than it needs to be, they were fitted as standard for dwarves to drive the cars.

There are 2 different diameters of the lozenge wheel, one is quite large and fairly thin rimmed, the other is smaller diameter and chunkier rimmed (928 part number if I recall).

Audi Sport steering wheels also fit the splines but the horn needs some work, but provides a nice looking wheel for £50.

Thats some good info, thanks. Ill check the seat first, in the mean time i'll check out some wheels. The 320mm thinnish Momo looks pretty nice, hefty price tag though, but ill have a butchers at the Audi stuff first. Cheers
