Recently installed netgear adsl router. Trying to add a desktop pc to the network and although I can see the desktop pc (XP) from my laptop (W2000) [the icon is there in windows explorer under Windows MS Network], if I try to open the folder I get a message "there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request".

I have enabled folder share on network on the desktop.

Any ideas?

logon servers would usually indicate the machine to which you're attempting to connect is part of a domain (and you cannot see the domain controller).

Have you also tried the usual tests (ping etc)?
