Hi all,

I've just put a deposit down on a 997 Turbo Cab 2008/58 the one with the gen 2 Nav but gen 1 body. Ive agreed to pay £50500 and the car's supposedly done 40000 miles with one owner. It has ceramic brakes and the dealer is going to pay for a four year major service, sounds good?

My concernes are that it's covered in stone chips at just 40k miles? Has only one stamp in the book from a non franchised dealer, ths was carried out back in 2010 at 8000 miles, no other stamps.

My question would be, assuming the discs and pads being ceramic are original? I understand that the wear could be measured? How much wear would be acceptable on a 40k mile car? and how else can I reassure myself before purchase?

Thanks for reading.
Carlos

I was reading your post thinking that sounds cheap for a turbo cab with pcm3 and ceramics but the history explains why.

Make sure you get a thorough inspection as IMI says, car like that should really have been through the porsche network for a good few years. The fact it hasn't seen one would not sit well with me.

I hope you didn't leave a big deposit. I'd want to speak to the one owner and see if it has had at least two services like it should have done, otherwise I'd steer well clear. Stonechips are unavoidable without paint protection film, and can be fixed by a front end respray, but if it really has been run 32k without maintenance that won't do a performance car like this much good and shouts neglect.

But there would need to be a car in front of it doing 200 mph as well to get chips on the front!!

Really need to get this checked out by an Indy or opc before you commit £50+k. Given the lack of service history it maybe an idea to get a good warranty on it as well.

The stone chips are probably down 80+mph motorway driving or trackdays. Maybe get the dealer to respray before sale?

PCCBs should last 90+k on reasonable use, but the opc/indy check should indicate life expectancy. Make sure they give the number of chips on the discs. Iirc three or more chips is disc replacement in opc eyes. The mileage probably indicates 3-4 sets of tyres, and plenty of chance for cheapy tyre places to catch and chip the ceramic discs.

In terms of buying it with one minor service in the first 40k miles. Even with the Indy/opc check and warranty, it will be a difficult private sell when you want to get rid. Trade in will probably be your only option when you want to move the car on, and they are likely to significantly reduce the price. As an example, Webuyanycar seem to knock off around 5-10% when comparing little history to full history for a car.

Whether you run away or stay with the car, at least do it with you eyes wide open. At least the opc check may give you an opportunity of knocking money off/getting it fixed. smile

I think I know the car you referring to - if its the one I'm thinking of it was driven by Chris Evans for a while!

Would a OPC 100 point check be worth doing, or is there a more suitable check?

Have noticed the bottom of rear seats are both in with Velcro, is this done from factory?

If its the one placed recently with a dealer in Swindon, Chris Evans used to have access to it and used it a lot - I remember hearing via a friend how much he liked it and thought it was the perfect car! - dunno why he didn't just buy one himself - but he's a Fezza man isn't he - probably didn't wanna admit that the porkas are far more usable!

As to the rear seat cushions held in place with velcro - thats normal, they come out of the factory like that!

OPC check fine and they may be able to dig history out. Nine Excellence or Peter Morgan an alternative

Is that at the Swindon main dealers?

The OPC check and possibly a compression check would allow an OPC warranty on it iirc. A respected Indy would do a more comprehensive check, and with a major service you could put on a 12 month warranty direct or warrantywise to cover the oily bits. However any OEM warranty will not normally cover seals nor any non-mechanical/non-electrical parts.

Have you contacted the one owner to ask why its only had one service in 40k yet?
