Canon photos image size too big to upload

I have just bought a Canon Powershot A3400 IS.
I have installed the disc that came with it. The problem is the size of the JPEG images are approx 2.8 MB meaning that they are too big to upload on forums i.e Pistonheads. The size of the images from my previous camera were approx 800 KB. How can I get them smaller so I can upload them?

Do you need to be taking the photos at the resolution or size you're currently using? Reduce the picture size on the camera settings, and the file sizes will come down too.
Otherwise try resizing the photo using the standard Windows software. The Win7 tool works surprisingly well for this.

As a rule I always shoot as big and detailed as possible. Almost all of my (post RAW conversion) JPEGS come out at 4-6MB each. Photobucket hosts them without issue for general stuff, and for my 'photography' shots I use Flickr. I wouldn't personally mess around with something in camera - best to retain as much detail as you can and let websites like Photobucket worry about resizing etc.

Exactly my thoughts! 2.8Mb isn't that large for an image size. Use a decent image host like Photobucket.tenohfive said:

Exactly, you can easily downsize but upscaling becomes fraught with issues.I shoot at full resolution raw (my camera can do small or medium raw too), an edited TIFF is around 100Mb, a full size jpeg is around 25Mb but if just for web use I downsize them to 800px longest edge so around 300-400Kb.
There's nothing wrong with reducing the size of the image in camera if thats what you want for a shot for a forum post (bad parking/look at my dinner etc.) But remember to put it back up again right after, it's easy to forget to change it back and take some shots the next day and be stuck with the lower resolution.
