Last two start ups oil says -4 and takes a while to come positive. So it disables the other gauges and sounds a warning.
Water temp both times before start up was 3 and 5. It is not that cold.
New sensor three weeks ago worked fine from start , plenty of oil.
Any clues ?

It is f&&&ing cold though, right?
Sensor could either have failed/is failing (new, so @ top of the failure bathtub curve) or it could just be generally reading on the low side (tolerance issue).

As above - OR,
- The oil temp sensor is at the bottom'ish of the dry sump tank, and as such, is a bit more exposed.
Whereas, the dash water temp sensor is at the top of engine/throttle bodies 1 & 2, and may have some residual heat from engine....bit of a waffle really, could be just sensor offset as suggested.

I have noticed this, it is just the oil is at the bottom of the sensor range (being cold). It is happiest at 80-90deg and becomes less sensitive lower down. If it gives a false reading at 80 then that is the time to worry, easy to check with Diag's or the water temp.

Same, it has been cold and the sensors defenitly read on the cold side. bearing in mind the volume of oil in the engine it will take a fair old while for the warm oil to warm the rest of the chilli stuff in the tank. I find it funny that the low oil temp only fires when it hits -1, fine below that!
