I have not had much of a chance in the last few months to do much more on my new chassis, but today i sat down to try and reassemble the rear hubs. I have studied the bible but it's a bit short on detail.
I seem to have become stuck: I've pressed in the bearing outers, pressed/pushed on everything else that I can, assembled it all, put the splined spindle through, attached driveshafts and started to tighten the nut. It seems to have gone tight too early, should I tighten-back off a number of times to try and keep it running free until I do the final torque up or have I missed something obvious??

How has everyone else done this? Have I made an error in my assembly sequence?

I will need to tackle the fronts at some point so if any one has any 'top tips' they would be gratefully recieved!

After the hubs it's brakes and wheels followed by engine and gearbox - then at last body back on!

If its the nyloc nut you are talking about... that's what its supposed to do as soon as the nylon locking engages confused

No it's more than that, there is no free turn, the wheel would not move at all if fitted.

There is a lot more resistance on the rear wheels compared to the free spinning fronts. If you are saying with the wheel on it will not turn at all, i can only assume you have gone wrong somewhere with the bearings. The fittings of everything are all pretty straight forward, as you know, so its a bit difficult to say without a physical examination. I`d carefully re strip one side looking for the resistance.

When i did my wheel bearings i didnt press the dust seal all the way home on one of the hubs and this effectively locked the assembly due to interference. This may have been a front though. Worth a check.

I'm resigned to this really, although I'll check the dust seals as I know the nearside is not seated properly.

Its difficult to tell from your pics but have you fitted a washer before you fit the nyloc nut?

Yes, washer fitted. I'm heading out there again soon for a dissassemble to see what I can find.

This looks to have been the case. Once disassembled it was clear that the dust seals were not sitting correctly and binding the whole unit. I have done them up now by feel and they run round well, but with significant drag. I just need to get a 3/4 - 1/2 adaptor for my torque wrench to do them up precisely. By feel however, I think I may have been guilty of over tightening then initially.

Thanks for all the support!!

Glad you have sorted it. I doubt you will have over tightened them. The loading is something rediculous if i remember right.

Good luck with the rest of the build, its looking great.
