Perforated Bowel (contained)

Dear All,

I've just had one. You don't want one. Anyone else?

Felt st with temperature, shakes, stomach ache for 24hrs. Doctor says appendix. Ambulance ordered within 2hrs. No show. Partner chases. I have to be "re-assessed". Why? We know I need to go. Ambulance now 1hr away. 5 hours in total before it comes.
After that wait the NHS has been pretty good. Especially the initial diagnosis at Gloucester Royal A&E. Not appendix but bowel.

Lying in bed nil by mouth (2 days), canula in the arm and a catheter up your chap for 3 days is not a fun way to spend time. Home now with two joys incoming. First is soft, bland foods for a week or two. Worse is a colonoscopy which is being delayed to allow things to settle further.

I've been lucky x2. The containment means the contamination is local. If it gets all round the bowel then it's lights out. Also the recovery without surgery (at least so far),

that's because it wasn't yet an emergency. It was diagnosed by the GP as "just" inflamed rather than burst. Then it would have been lights & sirens,

Colonoscopy isnt as bad as it is made out to be- the preparation (picolax) is the worst part by far IMO. Endoscopy was far more uncomfortable than colonoscopy.

I had mine at glos royal also - dr hollywood (yep- her real name) & dr shaw in that dept are as good as they come, so dont worry too much about it

Because if you were an expert like me, you wouldn't perforate your bowel!

PS When being wheeled into the colonoscopy room, don't ask, "Could I have local so I can watch the screen, please?" The anaesthetic didn't kick in until I had left the room!!

GP booked it as an 'urgent' and agreed a preferred and maximum time frame when making the booking ...

Misdiagnosis and mis prioritisation by GPs is an issue but it;s GP issue not an Ambulance issue as after all the GP is a Medical Practitioner on the Specialist register and present with the patient, the call taker in ambulance control is a random bod on band 3 or 4 with a few weeks training .

Most people who have done A+E ambulance work or worked in A+E / assessment units in Hospitals will have tales of big sick patients missed by GPs who were on deaths door by the time the crew came to collect them ...

TBH, it's not a terrible pain. It was discomfort like someone standing on you. Given a choice between having another colonoscopy without anaesthetic or having my teeth scoured by my dentist...

I noticed that when I tensed in discomfort, I closed up the bowel (I could see it from the TV) and quickly learnt that if I relaxed, the bowel opened up and it didn't hurt.

My sympathy is with you- I had this and subsequent peritonitis last year following burst appendix- not nice!

When the doc finaly came round my patents house and diagnosed my appendix was poorly it took the ambulance hours to turn up. When they finally got me in they told me appendix had burst, I had peritonitis and was hours from death! Luckily they managed to clean me up, and the antibiotics did their job. Lucky escape eh?

I've had a colonoscopy with no anaesthetic, it wasn't that bad! Lying on your side in a weak state (due to lack of food combined with 24hours of bowl evacuation) whilst watching (and feeling) your privacy being violated is more surreal than painful (to me). The biopsys they took felt bizare!

The worst part for me was having to drink 4 pints of lax and the 24 hours that followed!
