Starter DIY home studio requirements....

what would a simple home DIY studio basic equipment be?

my jessops flash is also a slave, ive no tripod or backdrop

How about:

1 Get a tripod
2 What are you going to use as a backdrop?
3 You'll need natural or artificial light and ways of controlling it (reflector/umbrella/softbox)

This works for me: White room, choice of backgrounds, one or two (flash)lights with various strap-ons, subject, props:




No need for a tripod unless you want to take several shots from exactly the same place, it will just slow you down. Synch speed is usually 1/200th and if you can't handhold that you need a care home not a studio

I thought it was... or at least mostly collie. He's an obedience champion and his two dog buddies were pretty good too.

You need the ability to control light, you'll get light either from daylight, or you can add your own - flash or continuous. Flash is good for when you want power to pick any aperture that takes your fancy, but limits your shutter speeds to 1/200'th ish if you're triggering it manually. Continuous will make everything yellow, so you'll need your white balance down in the blue.

You can get cheap starter kits of either from WEX for around £200, Karlu were doing a full Interfit kit with backdrop and either umbrellas or softboxes for about £350. These are powered flash heads, you could go the Strobist route and use speedlights, you'll need triggers either way

If you're not planning on expanding out your modifiers (beauty dishes, more softboxes, Octas etc) then it wont really matter which brand you go for
