... not sure whats wrong with car about to christened "bh"

Rev limiter kicking at 4.5k revs, not free reving feels booged down... and intermittently stalling at junctions (but when it starts doing this it is carries on).

Changed fuel relays, temp sender behind the dizzy..... checked afm connected, checked all ht leads, checked stepper and connections, checked injector all connected..... any ideas before it gets dropped at local garage

Blocked airfilter or perhaps a failed AFM and the car is permanently in limp home mode??

Limp home mode ????? is this really at 4.5k revs.... that's still doing "calculated speeds" circa 120 mph

sounds plausable..... as seemed free reving for a bit when reconnected ECU......

i'll check the airways and filters as had plenum intake enlarged at last service..... tried a diff AFM on it last year and that didn't make any difference...... car was running superb after service, and the bogging down experienced last year had gone, only to re-appear (and worse) a few hundred miles latter.

wondering if it's on the fueling side, as when it's in it's stalling mode big smell of fuel......

Does sound like an afm or ecu problem.

I remember suffering the same maladies a year or so ago before I sold my 500. I think I read a chapter on the V8 pages or similar named site advising how to remove the chip in the ECU and clean thoroughly and carefully . It worked for me .

I'll look at taking the chip out tomorrow and give it clean....... it's only a few years old as MA remapped it all.... might drop him a line for a replacement one if it looks bad

Mine wouldn't rev past 4500 and was overfuelling like a bcensoredd.

That was all solved by a new cam....... frown

Was thinking of the cam condition, does it feel like a limiter or just not revving any more?

If its stinking of fuel we automatically think afm ecu, which are probably worth checking first, but a poor missing spark will make it stink.

How old is the coil and amp?

Engine rebuilt approx 3k miles ago... doubt it's the cam... as it flies when everything is just so

Def limiter....as it cuts dead, and then picks back up when revs dropped

To be honest having a sorted aftermarket ignition system fitted instead of the original would be a plus point in my eyes if I was in the market for another car, whether the value would increase proportionally to the ammount spent fitting it is another matter .

Yes I know the 14cux can be fine and trouble free , but at the age these cars are now there seems to be more of a likelihood of issues.

I have almost finished fitting an Emerald to mine. Whether or not it has effected future re sale value does not really bother me. If i had bought the car as an investment it would never come out of the garage. I have the car to use and enjoy, allbeit a Sunday toy.

I made the decision to go aftermarket ecu for a few reasons;

Reliablilty. As has been said these systems and engine looms are 20+ years old. Although i didnt have problems, who knows how close they were to appearing. Yes they might not have appeared but at least i know i have a new modern up to date system running coil packs. There is also the issue of quality Lucas items becoming like hens teeth.

There should hopefully be some pluses in performance and general smooth running from the fully mappable fuel and ignition once set up correctly.

I also just fancied doing it as a project. One which i have thoroughly enjoyed.

Each to their own but i for one couldnt really care less about whether it has effected re sale value. Use and enjoy the car as you want and see fit.

Change the ignition amp Hoov, they are about £15 so it's not worth not doing.
Then either change or borrow a coil.

Just to eliminate the cheap/easy stuff.
You should have these in your spares box anyway so it's not money wasted if it turns out not to be the problem
