hello,

these A4 1.8, how many miles can they do before they go pop! ? i have seen lots with 97-100+ thousand miles would it be advisable not to buy these with such high mileage?

what are the common faults on these cars?

generally most audi engines will go past 200k if properly maintained.
there's an old 5 cylinder 100 that's just passed the california emissions tests with 490k on the clock.

If this is the later generation 1.8 20v engine then they are generally pretty bullet proof. They are based on the good old 1781 cc Golf GTI engine.

The only major piece of advice is to make sure the cambelt have been done at the right intervals. I think VW/Audi says 70k? However I always had mine done at 50k intervals as it is not a major job and not worth the risk.

Apart from that, make sure the oil has been changed regularly.

Alternators can go at about 140k, sometime before if they have had a hard life. I think the SE has an uprated alternator so they may last longer??

Water pumps can go at about 150-170k.

Audi do exchange parts on the pumps so they are not too expensive.

My A4 is still surviving texas weather at 116k miles, although it did just get an expensive timingbelt change
