someone asked for some pictures so here you go..

super bright units... point downwards so close up they dont look bright as they are so so low, but from far away very bright.

I dont turn them off when other lights on, so a great addition to the dip beam,.,hahahhan

Here are mine:

They turn off when the headlights are on. I thought that was a requirement, but lots of Mercs etc run with headlights and daylights on!

Nice lights Mike. Care to share some more details (type of light, etc) as I will be needing to consider them when I get to that part of the build. In Switzerland all new vehicles must have them now and an Ultima is no exception. By the way, are the other lights standard Ultima lights?

DRLs are a pain IMO. I'm fed up of being dazzled by factory fit & aftermarket fairy lights. Definitely not putting them anywhere near my car!

I'm with Mark on that, they're almost as annoying as following someone whose left their fog lights on.

I understand your reaction (mine also), but what do you do when it's mandatory to have them?

The rules around brightness / usage, etc need to be sorted.... at the moment many of these products are brighter than dipped beam, but unfocussed!

As Jon says, they are as annoying as fog lights, but worse than that: DRLs have become so bright that I now see people driving around at night with no other lights on their car! Sure you can see them coming head on (because they're dazzling you), but from the back, there's no tail lights on!! DRLs are a feckin' menace currently.

The top left light is what Ultima fitted to early GTRs. It was high beam and side light only. There was a similar unit "next door" which was high and dip beam. Unfortunately the dip beams were terrible. Bottom right was similar to the current set up, a high beam "driving light".

I have always been looking to upgrade my lights. Unfortunately the current Ultima set up was not an option due to different mountings and perspex light covers (my covers have shallower "bubbles") After much measuring and searching I found some HELLA lights which would fit in my light pods, but I had to make up some adjustable mounting plates. The top right is a dip beam, the lower right a high beam. They give out a remarkable amount of light compared to the old set up. The DRLs were created simply by attaching LED strips around the high beam units.

Apart from improving the lights why did I add the DRLs? Mainly to prove that I could! I may even put some more LEDs around the dip lights (there's more room there) The thing about a kit car is that one is always trying to make it better/different. During my 13 years of ownership, I have always tried to do things, no matter how small, to make it "unique".

square peg in a round hole, 30 bob lights on a 30 grand car. not a good look, cheap and tacky springs to mind! ( sorry someone had to say it).

I like that. That is a rather discrete way of installing them.

Discrete indeed and looks OK behind the grill. Perhaps Dom should do the same to hide his in the air vent

shapeways were advertising that they are able to 3d print "light tubes", I wonder if it would be posible to do one off 3d printed light lenses ro focus the LEDs.

Why?

everyone to there own.

these 30 bob lights as someone suggested are the top of the range philips units and ultra bright.

i decided on not having grills as some other units go in there too.

the advantage of this is 2 fold, 1/ everyone moves out of the way on the motorway as the lights are so bright and 2/ someone doesnt get a fix on my speed when im approaching. whoops!!!

ooo there is a 3 too... ive got brake ducts for my brakes ...;0)
