I've been bleeding through the clutch and brake circuits today on my Vixen. I had a bit of problem getting the slave union to seal and had to remake the pipe end three times before it would seal properly! Got there in the end but the clutch does seem rather heavy.

I have never driven a Vixen before. In fact I've never even heard one running apart from on the net! I realise that a 45 year old car isn't going to have a clutch that feels like a modern car but I wondered what the view was from those with a four pot Vixen about how heavy the clutch feels?

Couple of thoughts....

When I bought my Vixen S3 many years ago, it had an uprated clutch, and was pretty heavy even with the cable clutch setup. Different engine (and clutch) was much lighter.

Have had heavy clutch in a Triumph saloon (which are hydraulic) and it turned out to be the slave cylinder was knackered, even though it wasn't leaking, it was corroded inside and very stiff as a result.

Andy, the clutch feels pleasantly comfortable on mine, neither too light or heavy. However, although same engine, S3 is cable clutch not hydraulic so may not be a realistic comparison.

I forgot that the later Vixens have a cable clutch. My car has the old TVR "biscuit tin" style pedal box and I replaced the original master cylinder with an identical 0.7 Girling unit with a plastic cranked reservoir. It's not ridiculously heavy but I was expecting it to have a lighter feel. I'm sure it will help when the seat is bolted to the floor!

I ran an uprated 7 1/2" clutch in my 1600M for a few years, it was horribly heavy and also either in or out when driving. This was too vicious for the diff, I went through several, I cured the problem by fitting the larger later type 8 1/2" clutch and flywheel. My S2 Vixen also runs the same as that has a type 9 box converted to cable operation too, not too heavy to drive but just that bit beefier a clutch than the original. Burton power used to do a lightened Lotus flywheel so mix and match Lotus Cortina clutch will fit either gearbox, just be aware the starter bendix may jam on the pressure plate but a later pre-engaged starter cures this.
