I've had my CL55AMG since the end of 2005, having been my daily driver. It was just under three years old when I got it and it has never failed to impress. An excellent all-rounder that was just as happy on very long easy drives or short, spirited blasts around the countryside. That said, it is now ten years old and the time had come to consider it's replacement. We weren't in a hurry but an opportunity arose that couldn't be passed over ... a CL63AMG with just 12k miles at three years old and with an interior that was boring black with black bits!

Very sad to see the old car go but VERY pleased with the replacement (even if it only drink Super and does at least 5mpg less that the old car!)....

This ....

was traded in for this ....

If anyone fancies a CL55AMG with 118k miles on the clock and a full MB service history (with no expense spared) and only MB parts used, it was last seen at MB of Poole on the plate LE03 PJY.....

Stunning car, what a lovely place to be that interior looks too.

How does performance compare between the two?

The old one was no slouch but the new one is much quicker. The old one was also much quieter at the tail end whereas the exhaust note of the new one is music to the ears!

The previous owner spec'd the car with pretty much every option and gadget and also went for Designo leather. I'm a fan of grey interiors on mercs and this is how the old CL was. Unfortunately, we could only find black interiors on the extremely limited number of MB-approved used CLs so we jumped at this unusual interior even though we've never consider this type of colour combo before....and we love it!

Sadly I suspect this is one of the last cars you'll see with such a big normally-aspirated V8....

I've been looking at CL63s for a while now - just trying to find one at a good price. My main concern aside from the poor fuel consumption and hideous cost for brake discs is depreciation. A £35k car will drop £6k in a year I suspect. They also seem to be unshiftable at any price as they approach 100k miles. The CL500 makes so much more sense but I feel the need for that 6.2 V8 in my life!

How are you finding the ride? By all accounts on 20" wheels it's a bit harsh - I wonder if the forged wheels make any difference with a lower unpsrung weight?

I don't really think that sub 20 percent depreciation is unreasonable. I hear what you're saying about the 500 as they are obviously more sensible and are starting to look great value. The AMG version is other worldly though. coolevil

Semi-snap: My CL55 has driven on to horizons new. It was time to change but I felt huge pangs of guilt and double-guessing when swapping the keys for an SL55.

The W215 was/is a fantastic car, and it does everything wonderfully well. I'd had mine for over three years, and I was fairly fastidious about it's presentation. Long believed that if you look after something, it will look after you.

Always appreciated the '63, and it's a far more 'rorty' sounding car, and the cabin is superlative. Lovely car you have there.

Maybe not, however I have no intention of losing that sort of money. To date I've sold every car I've owned for the same if not more money a year later - somehow I don't think I'll be able to do that if I buy a CL63 frown.

No, you won't. I can't think it would be easy to achieve zero depreciation with any car that is sub five years old, usable and capable of seating four people, especially if you plan to put a normal number of miles on it.

If you cruise sensibly theses engines will return 20mpg if most of that is not urban. I have seen 27 on a run at 70ish...as to brake disks, I am trialling a set of Mintex which were considerably cheaper than OEM. All i have done thus far is to bed them in as the car won't be on the road until this hell has unfrozen...

The 6.2 litre natasp engine is well worth the investment in petroleum though. Just wind your window down after the investment in Shell VPower and it'll make you forget the bill smile

Mintex are cheap and cheerful and not something I'd consider using as a replacement. I always stick to OEM brands like Pagid / Jurid / Textar for MB. That said I'd stick with the composite discs on the CL.

Speak for yourself. They have always served me well on the performance cars I have owned. The discs on my CLK63 are not composite either...100% steel

I'm speaking from experience and advice from MB specialists who get to fit non-MB discs for customers all the time. Mintex never fit right, they always corrode quickly and don't offer the same performance compared to the OEM manufacturers. Obviously if they serve you well enjoy.

The CLK is quite a bit lighter than the CL so composites aren't required.

Lovely motor and nice colour combination.

Always had a soft spot for the CL.

Interesting thread. Would like to hear more about the performance difference - I always thought the 55 would be quicker what with the torque from the supercharger, but It sounds like I am wrong.

Also can you tell us about reliability of your old CL, for those of us considering one? My friend is on his 2nd ABC failure, but then his does have 160k+ miles.

I do see both versions of CLs for sale frequently and get tempted. I love the quality and luxury. However I suppose I would have to drive one first to check it's not too soft for the kinds of A roads I tend to occupy.

With regards the 500 models, I have driven the 2010 SL500 (the recent 5.5 n/a engine with 388bhp) which went well if you got a few revs on board. However I've also been in an E500 with the replacement to this engine - the 4.7 turbo with around 420bhp. This was truly quick, it lit up the rear tyres no problem in a dead straight line In the dry. I would really go for this turbo engine if possible. The torque makes it very meaty and you save a lot on fuel economy too. It's probably a better match for the amg engines. Sadly, 500 cars with the turbo engine are too pricey right now but i would be very tempted if cars with that engine hit 20k.

I will let you know. If they don't do the job I will know pretty quickly. The OEM disks cracked between the holes which is what the OEMs on the 964 RS did as well.

Cross-drilled discs are always at risk of cracking. I'm surprised the OEM discs on the 964 did the same as I thought Porsche used to use discs that were cast with the holes in rather than drilling?
