Any recommendations for the best one for use in an Ultima GTR - one that may warn of cameras etc? Or are they all much the same?

Personal choice for the most part.
I've used the same TomTom 700 for many years now and am still very happy with it. I can download new firmware for free and buy a new map set about once a year.
I expect they all do speed cameras. Just remember to delete the cameras completely if you go to France as they are illegal. You hear stories of drivers being told to run over the satnav rather than be booked.

As Steve says personal choice, I go from TomTom XL to iPhone NavFree, using the iPhone saves on wires as I use the phone to stream music as well.

When are you going to pick your car up, I still need to get mine, are you anywhere near me?

I use an iPad in my Ultima. I have a sticky mount attached to the dash and usb charger under the dash. I can use the rear camera as a forward facing camera, watch video, Sky Go, play music, etc, etc.
I have TomTom Europe software which is regularly updated.

No Steve, you don't have to delete cameras in France. The detection is forbidden but the indication is legal...

Another 'old wives tale' or Chinese whispers issue then.
Thanks for the update.

I use Sygic Fleet Truck for Windows 7 in my Can Am..... I do, however, have a mini-ITX 2.2ghz PC, with centre console mounted touch screen in the car, which might not make my solution suitable for everyone wink

Utima convoy?!

I am in Surrey. Where are you?

I still have a problem that they are gritting the M1 daily - even though no rain or snow so I can't really see the point. Unless the forecast is wrong it now looks like next Monday rather than this Friday.

I need to collect the car so have arranged for tomorrow, didn't realise that they were still gritting the M1.
I'm in Essex near Chelmsford.

Well as they say 'the best laid plans.....' couldn't go today as my wife fell ill overnight so no lift up to Nuneaton. Might try to go up on Sat Sun now.

Blessing in disguise I think (hope your wife is OK of course!). Roads should be a lot less salty on Sunday.

I think I'll go for a Garmin (as I already have one and am used to it) and supplement it with the speed camera download subscription recommended on the post above. Probably suction pad on the passenger side of the windscreen where it curves round I think - but will play with it when I have the car back.

Train booked for Monday now to go up to Hinckley and bring her home. Weather seems to be turning over the weekend so hopefully no more salt on the M1. Next week off work so a good chance to get used to 700hp!!!

A good friend wants a drive - we have always driven each others cars in the past and have had some relatively quick stuff (but nothing like this). Makes me a bit nervous!

Good luck with the train, even more so with 700hp, your right foot is your traction control!

There are so many apps for the iPhone/pad now that I have altimiters, speedometers, lap timers, sat nav, video camera, TV, computer (email and web), photo album, etc, etc,.

Go iPad mini if a proper one is too big!

Why would you just want a sat nav?

i had no problem getting the train up from Kings Cross. hardest part was timing the transfer to get the connecting train back down the branch line. Certainly no diferent to catching the train in Australia. got a taxi out to Ultima from the station.

Ted droped me back at the station after the visit.
