Have some of these hanging around from a holiday. One of them is over two weeks old.

Do they ever expire or will they just hang their annoyingly until someone calls the money?

My guess is it will hang around. About 10 years ago, bought some BA tickets and the RBS card was debited 5 months later, I queried the transaction and then remembered when I was smugley reminded that transaction were my responsibility

Some transactions can take up to 30 days, some can take even longer but then you bank is likely to be able to charge them back as they should be presented within a reasonable time (it is a grey area, ultimately you are responsible and it is down to your bank to decide if they want to pay the money and chase you or return the money).

Most should clear within a couple of days.

You cant assume the money wont be claimed.

Hotels often pre-authorise at least the first nights charge so they can charge you if you don't show up.
