Alway wanted a 993 and I must admit I absolutely love my C2. I'm always having a quick glance over the classifieds though just to see what's on offer, but I'm amazed the prices 964s are going for.

I keep reading ads for up together good serviced 964s some with stellar mileage yet around 20k. As a previous 964 owner myself this is fair enough, however this is as much or more than a Simlair spec 993.

In the day when I owned my 964, you could never get a simlair speced 993 for anything like equal money.

To me at least it seems good (well I'm guessing good history) 964s are the more expensive option these days. Which is fair enough. Amazing how time changes everything, from unloved to very much in demand over only a few years.

Fair play I say.

Time changes everything, as it passes you get more perspective. The 993 was coveted because it was the last of the air-cooled and the most refined, its also a nice looker. Depending on the day of the week, it isn't the best though, the 964 was closer to the original and the best balance between usability and modernity. IMHO the 993 and 964 are on par.

For the record, I have a 964.

I remember when I had a 3.2 Carerra 12 years ago and everyone said to avoid the 964 which was so unloved. Now I have a 996T I will happily wait for the day when the 996 follows the 964.

I know, it will never happen as far more 996s were built, the head lights etc.

I think that the market is a little out of love with the 993 at the moment. I actually think that it's a misunderstood car. Years of strong values have made people turn away. We prefer the underdog don't we!

The 964 has come back from its previously unloved status to that of a hero. And it's all to do with the 964RS. I have always liked the 964 and I understand why people are turning back to them. It's the fastest and most refined version of the 911 With the original suspension and therefore handling characteristics.

But I still think the 993 is a much better 911 all round. That's by my definition, yours may well be different.

Both are great cars though and manual C2 versions are becoming harder to find.

Hi David, yes that was one of the original adverts I had seen and thought blimey, 964 prices are on the up.

Talking about 964s, hope your enjoying yours. Took the 993 yesterday to the coast, around trip of 300 miles and though cold, the sun was a shining and the roads were dry for a change. One of the best things about aircooled? The instant heat. :-)

How much do you think this would be after importing and paying all relevant taxes?

Hi Wozy,
yeah the market is always evolving. I was reading an old GT Purely Porsche mag at work the other day and there was a feature on future classics.
After the main cars (993, gt3 mk1 and 968cs, another car you've sampled) they questioned a few others, one of them being the 964. Their conclusion was no it won't be a classic.
Funny how even people in the know didn't have much time or love for the '64 even upto about 4 years ago.

I love them me and am enjoying the interest growing in them. There are some great cars being built into whatever their owners desire and I really hope I manage to get back into one one day, before the prices skyrocket. smile

A lot of good 964s are not even getting to the public market - they are being sold before being advertised and for a lot of money (28k+). I'm not saying that the ones advertised are not good, just that there is a pre market for these, especially the 964 c2.

If you look in Europe, it is hard to find a good 964 for less than 40k Euro now.

The other point is that they are money pits so a good example is going to command good money.

- engine rebuild between £4k and £12k depending on what required
- full respray and restoration including all new rubbers etc - £6k
- Interior - easily spend up to £5k
- Brakes/Suspension etc - up to £3k

Even if you are not making an RS Replica etc, just making a 964 like new, you can easily spend thousands.

Having restored four 964s in as many months, I just don't think you can find a good example at the £15k price unless you are willing to accept that it is going to need some of the above work done.

I also think imo that the shape of the 964 is helping prices - those that want to get into pre 89 might opt for a 964 if it has been restored - slightly more modern version but still with older looks.

Cars still good Warren and never missed a beat and I've enjoyed making it better since owning it which recently included replacing the front bushes and having it Geo'd so now it drives so precisely.
However...... I'm considering selling her as I've looming school fees and I know the guys at Paul Stephens will get top money for her. I've already spoken to them so it's just a case of taking her down there.
I had her inspected by Peter Morgan last August before I bought her which was a sound thing to do so she's in fine health for the next owner. Shame but I still have my gt3

Prefer the 964 to the 993, always have.
The C2 964 is the one for me but rare as hens teeth at the moment.
As stated earlier very expensive to put right if you get a poor one............

Yep, I'd definitely echo that. They are an expensive model to run, no two ways about it.
Part of the fun is perfecting them and making them your own, but boy does they hoover your wallet out. smile

+1 on them being wallet emptiers! However, keep trickling in the money and they won't let you down. Just done Spa and back in mine, without missing a beat. But needs a wash and de-salt now!

Why is it that when I owned mine (some 9 years ago) the bumpers always looked to heavy and big for the car. The 964 Turbo was the only model they looked correct on IMO.

Yet now they strangly compliment the car far better, and the 964 really is the most modern shape of the original.

The 964 doesn't have the original suspension design. The 964 was the 1st '911' to loose the original suspension design. Original was torsion bars, spring plates etc , 964 is coil springs
