When ordering a new Cayman S (manual gearbox). If I specify PASM and PTV. Do I really need Sport Chrono? Does anyone have it, and is it worth the extra dosh???

Thanks Don

On a PDK 991 it's a must. However I don't think it is for manual gearboxes.

I've not tried it - but it would appear that much of the functionality is designed to work with the PDK box - so as I'm having a manual - it's a box I've not ticked. Oh and you get that damned clock with it .... frown

gives you more of a slip angle on , so quite nice.

Dynamic gearbox mounts, sharper throttle response and some change to steering all look applicable to the manual cars. It turns off the stop-start (thank goodness) and does the blips on the downshifts too.

I like it just for the sharper throttle response.

Don't forget new Cayman comes with sports button as standard. The best features of sports chrono on a 987 are improved throttle response and increased slip angle by pressing the sports button - you get that anyway on the new car.

On a manual I would save my pennies for something else.

If it's the same option as the 987 Cayman where it's increased throttle response (shorter throttle travel), reduced PSM intervention, harder redline and the stop watch.... then I personally would not order this on a new car.

I have it on my Cayman R and although I used it at the beginning (novelty factor), I found that I preferred the standard throttle map as it gives me more throttle control as I felt the sport mode was a little too on/off with little in between.

I've never used the stop watch and no longer use the sport button now.

The real question is whether you can feel the difference in the engine mounts when "Sports Plus" is pressed?

I don't think I'd spec it in a manual, no. On a 9x7 car I might, but given that the 9x1 cars already have a Sport button for the throttle response then would I pay it just to have the clock, G force meter and the engine mounts? No, I don't think I would.

The blip on downshifts is actually a lot of fun and works very well. Engine mounts: I could not tell the difference between with and without. Throttle map: irrelevant IMO as all you do instead of the throttle is push your foot to the floor more is you want faster!

In answer to your question: no. You definitely do not need it. Only if you have cash to burn IMO.

Shouldn't the basic Porsche handle supremely well without ALL these extras? My 991 PDK 3.4 has none, not even larger wheels and when I had my driving course at Silverstone, the driving consultant did things with the same car that I'll never be able to do. Spend the cash on Bose instead.

Not sure if I would want the ECU to take the fun out of this for me personally, as mastering downshift blips is part of the driving experience. One of the reasons why I prefer manual to PDK!

on 981, it's dynamic TRANSMISSION mounts ..

which are a bit pointless if you have a manual gearbox which is 30kg lighter than a PDK box. There's not a lot of weight for "dynamicness" .. in contrast to the 991 which is the whole engine

there is a lot of incorrect info on this thread!

IMO unless its a frequent track car then you don't need it, i got it on my 981 as i didn't have it on the 997 just to see what all the fuss is about... tbh I've not used it once yet, the standard sport button does most of the job it seems smile

spend it on full leather dash, at least you get to see that every time you get in the car biggrin or save the dosh until PSE is available, this you do want!

Porsche claim the transmission mounts change the way the engine is connected on the Cayman.

Well they better change that or it is pointless smile I think engine dynamic mounts are not as crucial on MR car than FR or RR but some journalists say that they feel the difference.

I had no idea it was only the transmission mounts as I always thought it was the engine mounts .... but from the Porsche website:

"Time is precious and every hundredth of a second counts. The optional Sport Chrono Package makes your driving experience priceless thanks to an even sportier tuning of throttle response and handling characteristics.

The package comprises dynamic gearbox mounts, a performance display, a digital and analogue stopwatch and the SPORT PLUS button. When this is pressed, optional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) switches to ‘Sport’ mode for harder damping and more direct steering and therefore, even more intensive road holding.

The trigger threshold for PSM is raised. Agility is perceptibly enhanced when braking for corners with PSM, allowing even sportier braking and exit acceleration. For even greater dexterity, PSM can be set to standby while the car is still in SPORT PLUS mode. For safety, it is set to intervene automatically only when ABS assistance is required.

In conjunction with optional PDK, the Sport Chrono Package comes with two additional functions for a sporty drive that borders on a motorsport experience. The first is ‘Launch Control’, which is designed to produce a racing start.

The second function is the involving ‘motorsport-derived gearshift strategy’. Using this, Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) is geared up for the shortest possible shift times and optimum shift points, while torque boosts during gear changes provide the maximum acceleration available. This involving experience is further enhanced by overrun downshifts and the throttle-blip function for uncompromising driving pleasure.

An additional display in the steering wheel or either the instrument cluster indicates the SPORT or SPORT PLUS buttons and, with PDK, Launch Control have been activated. In conjunction with the optional Porsche Communication Management (PCM), a special display enables you to view, store and evaluate lap times or other driving times. It shows the total driving time, lap distance, lap number and lap times recorded so far.

Performance is further intensified by dynamic gearbox mounts. Read on to find out more".

I find I use the 'Sport Plus' button on my PDK 981 all the time. For me, the best part is the quicker gear change. I always leave it in manual mode and it makes the gear change brutally fast. You literally feel a thump in your back as you change up at high revs.

Off topic but I also noticed yesterday that if you press both gear change levers at the same time it puts the car in Neutral. Press again and you are back in gear.

that's supposed to be a 'unique' 991 GT3 PDK feature ..
