I really fancy giving this a go, maybe once a month. I've Googled it and there seems to be a few different clubs / organisations involved.
What would people recommend based on their experiences?
I live in Herts and don't mind what circuit it's at, though I'd prefer to do circuit to rallying, etc.

Most circuits run taster days so that you can see what marshalling is all about. Go for it, it's a great hobby

Still it's summer and it's nice to be out and about. Those first few weekends in November are bliss and you can start to feel your batteries recharge. Thena bout mid December you start to feel there is something missing. By mid January you are starting to get a little stir crazy and count down the days to the first weekend of the year in March.
And the cycle starts again
18+ years trackside and a lifetime in the vicinity, although not as one of the boys in orange. To give you an idea last w/e was Oulton, next is Donington, then a w/e off (unless I have to go to Mallory) then Snett on the Saturday before London Marathon on the Sunday then Silverstone the weekend after that. I haven’t started to worry about May onwards yet...
Once you have stood trackside or worked a busy pitlane nothing else will fire you up the same way short of getting behind the wheel yourself.

Anglesey Winter Race Day end of November/early December, Plum Pudding at Mallory on Boxing Day, training weekend in February all help to fill the gaps for me; BARC NW & BRSCC NW dinner dances fill the remaining gaps . . .Masochists don't have a close season - they marshal rallies!

Indeed there is the PP meet, rallies, a few others and the end of season dinners as you say. Not to mention the good old days of the FPA Winter Series!Masochists don't have a close season - they marshal rallies!
I've just signed up to be a marshal and I can't wait. It's taken about 2 months for my msa membership to come through so you might have to be prepared to wait for that.
I decided to go down the BMMC route and everyone there has been extremely helpful. It may also be worth checking out the marshalling forum over at 10tenths.com. It seems to be full of guys and gals who have a lot of experience and welcome new comers.

I thought you might be able to but every event sign up had a section to enter the msa no. Maybe I could have just ignored this but oh well. I guessed they might need it for insurance etc.
If you have no MSA number just leave it blank - if you're signed on properly you're covered by insurance. Animal said:
Not sure whereabouts in Herts you are, but Silverstone can't be too far from you? I did a marshalling taster day there last year. It wasn't for me, but you certainly get a proper insight into every aspect!

The only event which needs you need to 'earn your stripes' is the F1 GP - but 99% of other events in the UK always have room for an extra pair of hands and plenty of experianced heads to take you under their wing to pass on their knowledge - doesnt matter if its silverstone, or Mallory Park.Gassing Station | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
