Thanks chaps, wasn't that favourable to be honest. The SF area at this time of year is a little weird, there was a lot of mist when we left the city in the morning which resulted in a layer of moisture over everything, which made the roads quite slippy, in fact I had a little 'off' after 15 miles when descending through a series of hairpins 
Scraped my knee, thigh and elbow on the tarmac and made contact with the Armco which hurt a bit, but hey, Rule #5 prevails!
We got lucky as we moved North as the sun came out and burned off the cloud and mist and it was nice for most of the way, we got a couple of rain showers but it wasn't too bad. Certainly not as bad as the UK at the moment, so I concede that point.
Still, glad I ticket that box, and California was a great place to do it. I'll certainly be back, it's not too expensive from the East coast of the US where I reside, although taking your own bike gets expensive (I rented a Cannondale SuperSix from SF for this trip). Nice bike but wasn't quite set up exactly like my own, so I got a few aches and pains that were quite uncomfortable.
Interestingly, I noticed no difference whatsoever between my Aluminium CAAD9 and the Carbon SuperSix in terms of ride comfort or stiffness.
