When the car was jacked up the other day I noticed that, if I turn one of the back wheels by hand, the other wheel turns in the same direction - indicating that it has a LSD fitted.

The car is an '89 350i and therefore I don't think was fitted with an LSD as standard. Were they offered as an option or has it been fitted since?

I thought it was always an option on the 350i but standard on a 390SE. The rear cover plate should have a small metal plate retained by one of the bolts that reads 'PL' if it's a PowrLok; another plate should tell you the ratio (commonly 3.54:1, my car has a further option of the 3.31:1).

I've now read in the Bible that the Powrlock diff was an option on earlier 350's but was fitted as standard to all later V8's, the changeover being about when the A-frame rear suspension was introduced.
