That is the best upgrade I ever made to the Wedge. Totally transformed the driving experience.

Is there much involved fitting this as I have heard really good reports about it. Anybody got the phone number for RS components?

I fitted one (on my 1987 280i) some time ago without much trouble. With driver's side wheel off you can reach everything. Just remember to line up the splines so the steering wheel "points" forward. Mine was not a perfect fit. but reduced the up-and-down and sideways play to almost nothing.

A nice flange like that with a bush in the middle would make me happy, too ;^)

What's wrong with stock item 750-8813? Looks more heavy duty than the other one. 20mm i.d. with what looks like threaded holes for clamping bolts, so should work too....

I did that upgrade too about a year ago, and it makes a HUGE difference on my '82 280. The steering was much lighter after fitting the bearing, as well as removing a lot of the rattles. The original plastic bush was very, very, oval on mine, and I reckon it never was up to the job in the first place - too much side force I reckon.

Easy to do, just a bit of work with a file and drill, and make sure bulkhead sealed up with silicone afterwards.

I went to a bearings dealer here in NZ, they had never heard of the RS part number, but a quick description from me , and they said "Oh yeah, we have several sizes, metric or imperial? ... a 3/4? ... OK." So there looks to be a range of sizes available. It cost me 45 bucks, which is about 20 quid...

One to be aware of... depending on which column you have and what diameter bush you buy, you may have to fit a sleeve to get the fit right.

My version uses a slightly smaller bush than some have used, 17mm bore IIRC, so the bearing assembly is smaller than the existing hole in the firewall. I use an alloy adapter plate to compensate for the difference...

I have a complete bearing/bush/adapter plate lying around somewhere; two people asked for them last year but only one followed up and I lost track of who else wanted one!

My steering wheel doesn't turn much at all before the wheels turn - I think you may have a worn rack that needs to be replaced ???
