So who is looking forward to hearing the new v6's on song? me for one!

Cant see why the midget is hung up on trying keep the sound the same next year by use of artificial enhancers, as in my opinion the v8's sound st anyway.

V6 turbos will be so much sweeter

Sounds to me like Bernie in "Being asked silly question so giving daft answer as he has to say something". Which has then been "jazzed" up by some hack into a story pretending to be serious.

14000 rpm, V6 1.5 turbo.

I can't imagine an F1 engine ever sounding bad, although I would rather the unrestricted V10s came back...

All just different, I read somewhere that the v6 turbos should actaully sound higher pitch.

Because of science or something.

Always felt that the V10 noise was a little harsh and uncultured. What you really want is a NA V12

I don't care personally - they all sound like the world is being ripped apart when someone fires one up next to you. Tears right through your body... smile

I've been lucky enough to be within touching distance of a 1.5 turbo, a Ferrari v12, a 19k rpm Honda and a recent Williams in start mode. All are epic. Different, but epic.

True. But if you weren't around in 70s and 80s don't get over excited about the V6 noise prospects - the youtube stuff is of engines with massive boost compared to next year. Remember that we are talking - 750-800 bhp for 1.6's- the Renault and Honda V6s and BMW 4 were only 1500cc but in qualifying trim developed 1300bhp plus.

Wow, awsome power from a small engine.

I can't get my 1500cc past 13.00bhp hehe

Going on the assumption that the only stupid question is one you don't ask....

Does the boost an engine is running at have a direct correlation to the volume of noise it puts out?

Indeed.

I think Joe Saward has an interesting analysis:

That is actually a really good question; I assume the answer is 'yes ' because the more powerful the turbos got the meaner they sounded- generally. The early Renault which I saw debut at Silverstone 1977 just farted and hissed and nobody took it too seriously. It developed about 550 bhp I think. The V6 Renault in 1986 form with humungous boost and twin turbos , especially when mounted in the Ligiers , made the most enormous , ear splitting bellow under full load. But the BMW 4 (reportedly using aged road car blocks) just sort of thrummed and grumbled. No power being used to make noise then ? The only things I have ever seen accelerate like the Brabham were at Santa Pod- it was astonishingly quick. And with stick 'h' box shift , no traction control . steel brakes and unsophisticated aero anybody who tamed one of those things was a bloody hero in my book.

Edited to add that amazing as the turbos were few , if any ,cars sounded as good as the early 90s V10s and 12s. The more recent Toyota V10 also sounded staggering live. Current V8s- cannot tell one from the other- very very loud but not always in a good way. Having said that one of the best noises I ever heard was from a Ralt Honda V6 F2 car- it helped that I was standing three feet away in the Donington pits. No special privilege-I'm just an ordinary punter but very different times in the mid 80s..In the 70sand early 80s I would freely walk into pit garages of GP teams in the evening and nobody told you off - you are luvcy to do that in Formula Ford now. It started to go donwhill when GPs got more fans and fewer enthusiasts- I blame Nigel Mansell!

More boost = more flow. So presumably it's like blowing on a whistle. The harder you blow the louder it is.

This is the problem when the 'show' dictates the technology rather than the 'show' being as a consequence of great cars and great racing.

If Bernie could get away with there being no cars at all but a very clever optical illusion that still resulted in the grandstands being full and the 'Pay TV' generating the revenues, I have little doubt he'd do it.

more boost = more exhaust pressure to the turbo = less 'pulsation' in the exhaust = less 'noise'

(this assumes the only change is boost for a given engine setup)
